If I have a Hazel already, can I name my new baby Heather or are they too similar?

Don't like either...how about Hannah?

Untamedtoad · 03/09/2019 22:11

A thing to remember is when older, they will both be getting post for "Miss H *" and not knowing who's is who's. Could get annoying! I'm not keen on Heather personally either, reminds me of that woman that used to be on EastEnders, and I never even watched the awful programme! Willow, Rose, Ivy, Juno, Robyn, Brooke, Juliet, Nina, Freida, Aster, Ferne, Mathilde (shorten to Hilda or Matty).

Ferne is lovely! Hazel and Fearne are nice nature themed names

diddlediddle · 04/09/2019 02:16

Heather is a refreshing choice, I think it goes ok. To my ear Hazel and Ferne sounds more matchy in terms of theme.

SleepWarrior · 04/09/2019 02:39

The initial would put me off more than the matchy thing. Other ideas:

Bryony
Rose
Laurel/Lauren
Sorrel

It is twee - not monumentally cartoonishly twee, but definitely a bit. But the alternatives suggested above are just as twee to me - the matchy matchy thing comes from them both being plant names, far more than H-names. So Hazel and Willow/Fern/Lily sounds just as twee to me. Whereas Heather and Hilary or Hazel and Helen are less of a matchy statement.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the same initial - unlikely most of Munster, I rarely get post addressed by initial and by the time baby Hazel is old enough to have someone writing private letters to her, I’m not even sure we’d have mailed letters at all. If you love two names equally and one has a different initial, then I’d probably lean toward that. I wouldn’t however discount my clear number 1 name just because of a matching initial.

Best wishes

I wouldn’t worry about post and the initial

Post happens less and less, most things come by email or text message now.
All my doctors blood results I now get online and that’ll be the case for almost all doctors surgeries in the next couple of years
My phone bill and bank statements no longer come in the post either

MissHenty · 04/09/2019 17:01

Heather is lovely by the way and I wanted it for DC2

What about Edith?

Acornacorn · 04/09/2019 18:03

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate the different perspectives!

@Acornacorn have you made a decision ? Could you let us know when you have- people never do!

Acornacorn · 05/09/2019 13:59

Ha! No decision as yet. I think people often start thinking about names early on and then only make a final decision around the birth so I guess it makes sense that people rarely post about their final decision. Although I agree it is a shame.

Yes come back after the birth please! I occasionally see people update the threads and am really grateful. It’s nice when people have taken the time to give suggestions especially if the OP ends up using one of those suggestions!
