starkid · 30/08/2019 08:37

Hi, so this was done last year, where people look through the new ONS data for 2018 baby girl names, and list lesser used gems only given to less than 50 babies last year :) I've done a boys thread too.
Check here for top 1000 names or here for the full spreadsheets

I'll start with a few:

Andrea
Danielle
Leilani
Paloma

No, they aren't. There's loads of underused, beautiful names. And loads that originate from other countries so are less used here.

I particularly like:
Keziah, Marta, Caoimhe, Eilidh, Storm, Tamara, Ingrid, Jocelyn, Persephone, Trinity, Mabli, Lorelai, Remy, Kayleigh, Angelica, Ariel, Cassandra, Giovanna, Rebekah, Anoushka, Zadie, Kiki, Larissa, Rhiannon, Star, Teagan, Bryony, Fallon, Mercy, Noelle, Alessandra, Devon, Elowyn, Bronte, Clover, Rosina, Kathryn, Rio, Talitha, Zia, Genesis, Cherry, Jacqueline, Clarissa, Arrietty, Bronwyn, Giselle, Katrina, Miranda, Atlanta, Ramona, Elektra, Kirsten, Susannah, Amberley, Avril, Isadora, Ivory, Sorrel, Taryn, Christabel, Carlotta, Fenella, Sage, Xenia, Araminta, Della, Calliope, Silver, Venus, Amity, Calista, Cassiopeia, Delphi, Riona, Rainbow, Yvette, Alanis, Belinda, Calypso, Clarice, Teal, Aphra, Jessamy, Journey, Rocio, Zephyr, Gretel, Tansy and Zipporah

I also have an awed admiration for:
Amazing-Grace, Fanta, Iolanthe, Jupiter and Heavenly-Joy
though I would never consider going there.

What’s with the -rae, -mae, and -rose names?

They've been really popular for years and years. If anything, they're much less popular now than they used to be.

MikeUniformMike · 01/09/2019 19:54

I suggested Tamar as a name to a colleague, but the baby was a boy.

MissHenty · 02/09/2019 16:00

I LOVE the girls name Willa

Wish I could use it

courtlee · 05/09/2019 10:56

I love Cadence

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 05/09/2019 11:44

Willa?! Really.

I think there's a reason no one's used it.

RoseAdagio · 06/09/2019 08:01

Thank you, manicinsomniac! You included my daughter's name in there (Larissa). We love it and are glad it remains rare.

A few of our other NCT group baby names were also in the less than 50 group - Akira, Catalina and Alec.

Rarity isn't the be all and end - some names are rare for a good reason! - but it is quite a nice bonus if the name you love happens to be uncommon imho. 😊

Marshamello · 06/09/2019 08:14

To me Tamar has really bad connotations Shock

starkid · 06/09/2019 09:11

Some more I found:

Elinor
Cassia
Jane
Leandra
Roxanna
Evanna
Spencer (Yes I like this for a girl, in an American teen drama kind of way!)
Gwyneth
Ishbel
Winona

PS another vote for Paloma as being lovely, one of the assistants ar my daughter's first nursery was a lovely Spanish girl called Paloma so that's probably influenced my perception of it tbf!

When i picked the dc’s names only one was in the bottom of the top 1000.

16 years later and they’re both top 200, one is rapidly heading for the top 20 after a series of celebs have used it in the last 5-10 years.

Uncommon doesn’t always stay that way...

starkid · 06/09/2019 13:58

@Newname12 - agreed, my brothers name was a very strange/foreign choice, teased for it etc. Now 30+ years later it's top 200, and even top 300 for girls weirdly enough.
