Maurice, is it usable? Dated? Middle name potential or no...?

It’s an old man’s name. There was one in ds2’s nursery who’d had it shortened to Mossie... I expected to see an elderly farmer with shit covered wellies come strolling over when his Mum called him in the playground.

TigerDroveAgain · 29/08/2019 20:02

Some call him Mo-rees, some call him the gangster of love. Quite a name to live up to!

Whattodo20192 · 29/08/2019 20:04

Probably the only name I have seen suggested on MN that I hate and would not get used to.

katesalwayslate · 30/08/2019 07:32

For a 96 year old Italian American who smokes cigars and slicks his hair back with wax, it’s perfect.

For a baby, no!

Barbarafromblackpool · 30/08/2019 07:35

I know someone who recently called their new baby Maurice. I like it.

hazandduck · 30/08/2019 08:15

Reminds me of ‘Crazy Old Maurice,’ Belle’s crackpot Dad in Beauty and the Beast.

MoltoAgitato · 30/08/2019 08:19

I’m from Ireland and it’s not that unusual- I know a couple my age (under 40s). I really like it - tends to get causally shortened to Mo.

TempsPerdu · 30/08/2019 16:50

I don’t often say this about names, but it’s hideous. There was a Maurice in my school year back in the ‘90s and it was horribly dated then - even more so now. Struggling to think of many worse names tbh!

MileyWiley · 30/08/2019 16:56

Awful.

TheWashingMachine · 30/08/2019 17:02

Hideous, a house mate of mine had the sleaziest ever Italian boyfriend called Maurice, eughh. He was just so dreadful and she is still with him 25 years on. He was amoral.

eavers · 30/08/2019 20:39

I also know a female Maurice. Irish in her forties. Pronouced Maur reeece

HeadintheiClouds · 30/08/2019 20:45

No Irish woman was ever christened Maurice Shock. Bet you it started off as Maureen.

Sophronia · 31/08/2019 20:28

I prefer Morris.

Tillygetsit · 01/09/2019 00:22

Dreadful. And I knew a vile snakey one.

Inniu · 01/09/2019 00:26

It is my Dads name and my DSs middle name. Maurice, pronounced Morris

Secretlifeofme · 01/09/2019 00:27

If our baby due in October is a boy, one of his middle names will be Maurice, after DH's dad who died when DH was young. I suggested it - I think DH didn't because it is a dated name, but i felt it was important to honour DH's dad.
