Unfortunate initials

Baby will be born in 2 weeks, we’ve had our name picked since before she was conceived but have just swung to another name recently. We’ve decided to stick with the first name and have the new name as a middle name.

The problem is, her initials would be FAP 🙈

I’m thinking, how often do you even use initials like that Hmm but also it’s pretty unfortunate.

Would I be setting my baby up for a life time of taunts?

I've heard of FAP. Its something a gamer male might say online if he saw something that sexually enticed him but he would probably say it like "fap fap fap" to mimick the sound of wanking. No one will make fun of a baby's initials but as she gets older she might feel embarrassed especially if other silly kids find out. I would change the middle name or add another.

I'm in my 30's and I don't know anyone who doesn't know what that means. It's irrelevant for adults though, I don't think you'll find many teenagers who don't know and it's that age that will find it the most amusing.

powershowerforanhour · 24/08/2019 20:53

I'm 40 and know what it means. Easiest thing to add a middle name.
Always felt sorry for Sam Twiston-Davies, though I expect the expression was VD when he was named.

percheron67 · 24/08/2019 21:05

Please don't. Someone at school will know and call the child W....r. Would you have appreciated this?!

StockTakeFucks · 24/08/2019 21:22

How many people or children actually use or tell their full names? Even at school they'll be mostly called by their first name, unless there's 7 of them and then they might use last name or last name initials.

And by the time he's a teen/preteen FAP won't be a thing anymore because they'll have invented something else by then.

A lot of DD's classmates have no idea she has a middle name, much less what it is.

A piece of advice though, if rock hunting is still a thing when he's older don't let him sign the rocks he paints with his initials.Grin

I'm 30 something and I know what fap is though, I'm with the cool kids.Grin

In all my work place my computer initials are my initials, it's not that uncommon for adults to go by them at work for emails/system usernames. I'm quite happy I have a nice sound for my initials as we do tend to call each other by initials if they make a word, e.g. someone I work with has REG for their initials so gets called Reggie.

Proseccoinamug · 24/08/2019 22:38

I had no idea about FAP but now that I do, I wouldn’t use those initials. Work-wise, initials end up on everything.

Proseccoinamug · 24/08/2019 22:39

My work email address is initials, as are many places.
[email protected] for example!

Catalicious · 24/08/2019 22:59

Oh sweet Jesus no. Change it.

Pinkarsedfly · 24/08/2019 23:05

I once stood in front of a Year 11 English class and told them to remember the acronym FAP - Form, Audience, Purpose.

Blush

Judging from their reaction, I’d change it OP.

Never heard of a fap

Swisskit · 24/08/2019 23:26

My friend's initials are SAM and she's always been known as Sam, so you may need to think again.

GiggleMcDimples · 24/08/2019 23:44

I use my initials at least 20 times a day in my work, but I only use the first and last initial. Nobody uses their middle initial if they have one.

GiggleMcDimples · 24/08/2019 23:46

However, having said that, FAP is a rather unfortunate set of initials to be lumbered with. I'm 38 and fap has been around a while.

pallisers · 24/08/2019 23:47

mine are STD - before it was a thing. Luckily it is not much of a thing now.

Never had a problem.

My son has initials that spell the contraction of his name - very cool. No one has ever noticed it.

the only person I know whose initials mattered was Alexander Christopher Evans - called Ace Evans. Most people (all people?) had no idea why he was called Ace - just called him that.

RiftGibbon · 24/08/2019 23:49

My friend's late mother was Violet Smith* . She married George Davis.
She spent her whole married life known as 'Jane'

*Names changed, but initials are the same.

Sagradafamiliar · 24/08/2019 23:59

I only realised after registering my teen's birth that his full initials could be vaguely cringes. And only just now, that my 9 year old's are. No one would ever think to put the initials together, who even gives their middle names these days anyway let alone to school friends? I couldn't tell you what anyone's middle names are apart from my own and my children's.

Sagradafamiliar · 25/08/2019 00:00

Cringey*
