DH and I have a shortlist (finally Grin ) could you please say what you like/dislike about each name?

Clio
Lottie (Don’t want to use Charlotte as we don’t want it to be confusing for her when she learns her name as the connection between Lottie and Charlotte isn’t very obvious for a toddler with a different starting letter)
Cecily
Eden
Florence (Flo)
Emily (Em/Ems)

Thank you Smile

Children have been called things like Lottie/Charlotte Bill/William and even Daisy/Margaret for decades and all presumably learnt to write their names just fine?

Like all of your names except Cecily which is a bit fussy for my taste

loverboy · 04/08/2019 18:21

@riotlady
That’s true but I’m someone who stresses very easily and I would worry that if we always called her Lottie she wouldn’t be accustomed to Charlotte enough to spell it correctly without going by the whole thing.

Clio- a cat or a car
Lottie- I don't like it tbh, but it could be worse.
Cecily- quite like it, shortens to Cece. Does sound like Sicily
Eden- OK. I tend to associate it more with boys but it is unisex
Flo- Aunt Flo (well known period euphemism)
Emily- fine, a bit dull but thoroughly unobjectionable

whatausername · 04/08/2019 18:37

But she is only going to be a toddler for a very short time. She will be an adult much longer and may prefer not to have to introduce herself by such a...youthful name.

derekmorgan · 04/08/2019 18:39

I have a Lottie who is a Charlotte and it's never been an issue, she's 15 now.
Of your others I think that Cecily is lovely.

HMArsey · 04/08/2019 18:42

My favourite is Cleo but only with an e, otherwise it’s the car.

FeegleFion · 04/08/2019 18:43

I think they’re all very sweet with the exception of Eden (no idea why I dislike it but I do).

Cecily is my favourite from your list.

Star801 · 04/08/2019 18:43

I like Florence

PreschoolPlease · 04/08/2019 18:44

Emily, and Florence. I agree with other posters, Charlotte on bc.

Frith2013 · 04/08/2019 18:48

Clio - ok
Lottie (Don’t want to use Charlotte as we don’t want it to be confusing for her when she learns her name as the connection between Lottie and Charlotte isn’t very obvious for a toddler with a different starting letter) - ok
Cecily - ok. Makes me think of Cecily Parsley
Eden - meh
Florence (Flo) - ok
Emily (Em/Ems) - boring, too popular

papit · 04/08/2019 19:05

Clio - really like. Think I prefer Cleo spelling.
Lottie - lovely. Prefer to Charlotte. My sister is registered Kitty, not Katherine and there’s nothing bad that’s come from that.
Cecily - pretentious
Eden - don’t like at all
Florence (Flo) - nice, quite popular
Emily (Em/Ems) - so bland and overdone!

Vanillelle · 04/08/2019 19:08

Clio- I like this, although it was the name of my ex's cat. Won't be a problem for most people though!

Lottie (Don’t want to use Charlotte as we don’t want it to be confusing for her when she learns her name as the connection between Lottie and Charlotte isn’t very obvious for a toddler with a different starting letter) - she really won't find this confusing. Thousands of Lotties before her have managed. Lottie is very pretty but it is a nickname, it shouldn't be her christened name.

Cecily - very pretty

Eden - don't really like this, it's a bit too made up for my tastes

Florence (Flo) - again, very pretty and not too common

Emily (Em/Ems) - bit dull imo and I don't like the nicknames much.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 04/08/2019 20:04

I like Florence, Cecily (prefer Cecilia) and Lottie, in that order. I've known a Lottie since she was born - when she went to university she opted for her full name of Charlotte because she wanted to be seen as more serious and grown up. She also had the option of staying as Lottie, obviously.

Equatoria · 04/08/2019 20:11

Clio - Renault
Lottie - not keen, but like Carlotta with Lotta for short and you could also use Lottie
Cecily - lovely, also Cecilia
Eden - not keen
Florence (Flo) - love Florence, Flo not so much
Emily (Em/Ems) - really like, a classic

user1493494961 · 04/08/2019 21:42

Florence is lovely, Emily OK, prefer Charlotte shortened to Lottie, Clio car spelling, Cecily a bit frilly, dislike Eden.

imtheonlyupsieone · 04/08/2019 21:58

Clio - nice and although this is the Classical Greek spelling I prefer Cleo.
Lottie - as literally everyone else has said, Charlotte is a better choice for the BC so that she has a choice when older. If she learns her name as Lottie and can only spell Lottie to start with, that's fine! She can learn Charlotte later. No one is going to force her to write it!
Cecily - pretty
Eden - no. Seems like a chav boys name to me.
Florence (Flo) - ok but a bit overused imo.
Emily (Em/Ems) - duulllllll

Onetwistedsista · 04/08/2019 22:02

Clio spelt that way makes me think of that car. I feel the other names are old fashioned, unless that's what you're aiming for then , ok. Eden is lovely though

PixieLumos · 04/08/2019 22:04

Eden is lovely.

zvjezdica · 04/08/2019 22:57

Clio - pretty, but I prefer the spelling Cleo, this one makes me think of the car.
Lottie - I really don't like it, sorry. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a name that I personally don't like the look or sound of
Cecily - I love it! This is my favourite one. I'd use it in a heartbeat, so so pretty!
Eden - also lovely, I went to school with an Eden, she was part Filipino and absolutely beautiful and the name just seemed to fit her.
Florence (Flo) - agree with the person who mentioned Aunt Flo, Florence is pretty though. I know a little Florence who gets called Floss/Candy Floss and it's adorable
Emily (Em/Ems) - Emily is timeless and Em was one of my favourite names for years. As a kid I had a doll called Emily (Em) and when I was a teenager I was convinced that if I ever had a daughter I'd call her Emily or even just Em. I didn't end up calling my daughter that but it's still a great name!

Sophronia · 05/08/2019 00:05

Cecily or Clio

Shadow1234 · 05/08/2019 00:24

Love the name Eden for a girl.

Lottie (not Charlotte) would be my second choice

Icklepup · 06/08/2019 12:20

I like Eden

SultansOfSwing · 06/08/2019 15:55

Clio - may as well call her Renault.
Lottie - sounds like a pudding and overused.
Cecily - pretty name
Eden - unless you a religious it just seems a daft made up name.
Florence (Flo) - yes to Florence but no to flo. I dislike traditional names being shortened to sound modern.
Emily (Em/Ems) - yes to Emily but no to the shortened version for same reason as above.

Just my humble opinion

LittleDoveLove · 06/08/2019 20:16

Clio - it's ok
Lottie - not sure I can imagine a 45 year old called Lottie I would bake Charlotte and use Lottie as Ann.
Cecily- Don't like this
Eden - nice
Florence I love but definitely Flossy. Flo is an 80yr old woman
Emily - I've never liked this but is very popular so I'm the minority!

Equatoria · 07/08/2019 01:06

'Eden - unless you a religious it just seems a daft made up name.'

And if you are Christian it's a metaphorical place name, not a human name Grin
