Opinions on the Muslim name Mika

Hi
My neighbour just had a baby boy and asked me my opinion on the name she chosen for her son, Mika, pronounced Meeka.
She also is wondering about having Mikail pronounced Meekail, but shortened to Mika as a NN.

She already has two Lovely young ladies called Leena ( honestly LOVE this name), and Sumah( just like the season x).

I personally like the name, what’s you opinion on the name, how do you think the pronounciation would run for English speakers?

Also the family are half Turkish and half Moroccon but the name doesn’t really have to have ethnic origin

I personally don’t like the name. It’s a very common Indian name (for girls and boys depending on the region) and that’s probably colouring my opinion a bit. Pronunciation is Meeka but you could have the French version (Mica - Meesha) or call him Misha.

Has she asked you to post their very identifiable names on an free, international website used by millions?

And why have you specified a ‘Muslim’ name?

I didn’t realise any of them were exclusively ‘Muslim’ names. They’re just names.

But FWIW, all of those names are easily pronounced and spelt for pretty much every accent or dialect in the UK.

Hmm yes. A few people are not fans on the name and prefer Mica like Mycar. No Misha won’t do

@seesomthingsaysomething

I have her permission to post this. I specified Muslim name because when searching others like @teddybear45 have thought of the Indian version so I wanted to say which pronounciation I was talking off.

It's one of my favorite names for a girl. I have a female friend with the name. But I think it's gorgeous for a boy also!

Frith2013 · 29/07/2019 18:03

Mika like the singer, then.

It’s ok.

RightOnTheEdge · 29/07/2019 18:14

I like it. I think it's a lovely name. So are the others.

Lovely name.

firawla · 29/07/2019 18:23

I’ve never heard it, I hear Mikail a lot but never heard this on it’s own so maybe the long version would be a good idea? Then mika is a really cute nick name. I don’t think it’s hard for English people to pronounce, seems pretty simple!

Chista · 29/07/2019 18:24

Sorry never heard it as an indian name nor have I heard it as a muslim name. Its a nice name though and if they like it then thats all that matters

VivienneHolt · 30/07/2019 07:17

I like it, and it goes well with his sisters' names too.

FishCanFly · 30/07/2019 11:17

i can only think of F1 driver Mika Hakinnen - and he surely wasn't Muslim

MangoFeverDream · 30/07/2019 12:22

FWIW this is also a common Japanese girl’s name pronounced same way but shorter vowel sound

Youwillneverwalkalone12 · 03/08/2019 16:19

Yes I know it is also a Japanese girls name

I think it's a lovely name.
If she loves the name then she doesn't need to give a full version.

Livpool · 04/08/2019 18:03

I love both names - I love hearing my DS telling me all of the names from children in his preschool. So nice to hear a diverse group from Louis to Reuben to Mohammed to Jake.

stucknoue · 04/08/2019 18:10

It's a common German name

june2007 · 04/08/2019 18:15

Mika (sometimes spelt Mica) I actually an old testament name so is no more Islamic then Judaic or Christian.

fourquenelles · 04/08/2019 18:18

Off topic slightly but Mica (pronounced My-car) is the mineral that makes London pavements sparkle.

manicinsomniac · 05/08/2019 20:19

I really like it but I've only ever heard it for girls - though only twice to be fair. One was a girl I went to primary school with who may well have been a muslim, I'm not sure. The other is Mika from Waterloo Road who is very much a white north of England character.

I don't know if I like it for a boy.
