Odette

Thoughts? We already have an Aurora, aged 3. I know they’re both names of princesses and from ballet so I’m concerned that using them as sibling names will be a bit... twee?

Other name suggestions are appreciated for a girl and boy. Middle names for Odette too as we’re struggling.

Thanks, Liz x

It’s gorgeous, sounds lovely with Aurora too

LongPurples · 29/07/2019 00:40

I know you didn't ask for opinions on the name, but Odette makes me think 'omlette', so I don't like it at all, sorry.

However, in answer to your query about whether it is too matchy with Aurora, I would definitely connect them with ballet and mentally raise an eyebrow.

EllenEyewater · 29/07/2019 00:51

There’s always Giselle if you want to continue the ballet theme.

PaquitaVariation · 29/07/2019 01:09

I would make the ballet link but it’s a nice enough name. Would you continue the theme for a theoretical third child? Then it would become more obvious.

Botanica · 29/07/2019 04:56

Love it, and it's beautiful alongside Aurora.

Also made me think of the wartime spy too - a strong courageous woman.

LizzyMargaret · 29/07/2019 07:37

The ballet/princess link is probably the only thing putting us off using the name so we would probably make a conscious effort to avoid that if we don’t end up using Odette or have another child in the future.

Honestly? I think nearly everyone will say Odd ett. English speakers will anyway.

Marcipex · 29/07/2019 07:51

sisters I know are
Aurora and Bella
Aurora and Pixie

CruCru · 29/07/2019 09:34

Odette is a nice name. However, will it irritate you if people do mispronounce it? I have this problem with Genevieve - I’ve been told I don’t pronounce it the correct, French way but I really can’t hear the difference.

sunshineys · 29/07/2019 12:03

Odette is beautiful. How can it possibly be mispronounced? It's O dett

Antonin · 29/07/2019 12:27

Nice elegant name. The ballet connection is reasonably tenuous. Not a huge balletomane population out there and really, so what? Merely shows you possess some cultural awareness. Aurora has become popular apart from any ballet connection.
If anyone comments re how unusual Odette is just mention Odette Churchill and what a strong name you think it is.
Odette Viola is a lovely combination

RaininSummer · 29/07/2019 12:42

I really like Odette (and Aurora). Surely people will not say odd-ette? If they are unsure they will most likely ask. It would be spelled Oddette if it were to be pronounced in the 'odd' way.

CruCru · 29/07/2019 12:45

People will misspell or mispronounce almost any name as far as I can see. I used to have someone carry on calling me a name that ends in -ie long after I’d told him it actually ends in -ia.

AverageMummy · 29/07/2019 13:41

Odette is lovely & I can’t imagine more than a tiny proportion thinking it was pronounced Odd!

ThatCurlyGirl · 29/07/2019 13:48

Ottolie is one of my all time favourites, I knew a brilliant little girl with that name and we shortened it to Lettie (not sure why not Lottie!) as a nickname, it's gorgeous Smile

ThatCurlyGirl · 29/07/2019 13:49

I also love Ariette and Ariadne which might be along the same lines for you OP Smile

strawbmilk · 29/07/2019 13:51

Love it!

sunshineys · 29/07/2019 16:01

How can Odette be pronounced Odd?

mum2jakie · 29/07/2019 16:04

Ah - I thought it was pronounced Odd - ette. Never heard the name spoken in real life. I would imagine plenty of people will make the same mistake unless the name becomes more commonplace.

LizzyMargaret · 29/07/2019 18:10

Odd-ette has honestly never crossed my mind as I don’t see where the odd sound is coming from lol but eh, it doesn’t really bother us. We were told that Aurora’s name would get mispronounced a lot but we’ve not had any issues so far.

I knew an Odette once. She was a lovely, intelligent, ethereal lady. I like the name because of her.

Proseccoinamug · 29/07/2019 19:30

I like Odette. I also know an Odile.

Odette Rosanna
Odette Rebecca
Odette Penelope
Odette Hannah
Odette Cordelia
Odette Louise
Odette Ruby
Odette Amabel
Odette Willow

Proseccoinamug · 29/07/2019 19:32

I would say Odd-ette though.

LizzyMargaret · 29/07/2019 20:14

I love Odette Penelope. I also like Willow. I think Odetta would probably create a better flow with a lot of middle name options but I think having two daughters whose names end in the same sound adds to my concern of them being too cutesy together.

OP posts:
EllenEyewater · 29/07/2019 21:25

I wouldn’t go for Odette Willow - sounds too much like “a debt will owe”.

Odette Laurel
Odette Daphne
Odette Maria
Odette Rosalind
Odette Lorelei
