Hey I found the perfect baby name if I'm having a girl- Violet, I said this to my family and it turns out we had a family member in the not so distant past called Violet who was a horrible lady and she was my fathers auntie.
Would you still use the name knowing this?

Well, soon a name they’ve had no reason to like will have positive associations.

LookAtThatRedSheep · 21/07/2019 22:46

I would. It’s not like you’re naming your daughter after her, it’s just a coincidence that the name is the same. Your family will come to associate the name violet with your beautiful baby instead of the aunt.

Fwiw I think violet is a lovely name, I love Letty as a shortening 💖

Thank you both ! Hopefully 💓💓

I don't think there's anything wrong with using it. If you want to compromise maybe add to it - I love Violet-Rose

Contraceptionismyfriend · 21/07/2019 23:01

Just double check that she was just overall nasty and didn't do anything nasty.
Did she harm your father or one of his loved ones. If she did and that name is triggering then I'd say choose a different name.

If not tell them to suck it up and get over it.

Astronica · 22/07/2019 00:06

Of course you should still use it. I know of a situation where people have done something similar, and the rest of the family have come to love the name and see it in a new light with a delightful baby in the picture.

Don't discuss names with the family before she is born and officially named.

justilou1 · 22/07/2019 00:08

Too bad!!! You didn’t know her!!!

Equatoria · 22/07/2019 00:21

Keep the name. Your family members will get used to it and hardly think of the aunt.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/07/2019 00:30

Is your Dad still alive? I'd run it past him. DH's Nan's name is beautiful but she was mean to him so No way we'd ever have the name

mathanxiety · 22/07/2019 01:48

I agree with Contraceptionismyfriend - if she harmed anyone then I think you need to reconsider.

If not, then go ahead.

This ^

Can you compromise and maybe try Violetta or Violette? Not too far away from the original and they still keep the meaning.
