Tomboy names?

unicornsprinklesss · 16/07/2019 14:06

Doing this for my sister (who asked me) who is expecting a girl in September.

She loves tomboy names. Her DD1 (almost 3) is called Scout which we all love. And funny enough she is the girliest girl ever Grin

So we'd really appreciate some suggestions?

You can’t really have Scout and Harper. Piper is in a similar vein.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2019 08:58

Scout and Harper could have a brother called Atticus

Georgina (George) - from the Famous Five!

Bertrand- I think you were mentioned in The Times yesterday (MP bonking?)

BertrandRussell · 17/07/2019 09:51

“He'd get teased bertrand”
Had you thought about why?

Really? Where? It’s quite a while since I bonked an ‘MP!

Daryl
Joey (from Joanna or Josephine)

DCIRozHuntley · 17/07/2019 10:08

Agree Bertrand, although I have a Robyn nn Bobbie. Robyn is an actual girl's name though, and the nickname came organically.

Please don't give the little girl an actual boy name (James, Bailey). There is nothing wrong with being a girl. There are plenty of non-flowery, simple actual girls' names If that's what your sister means by "tomboy".

laylabella · 17/07/2019 10:11

Most of the names on here ARE unisex names. Bailey is as much a girls name as a boys name

BertrandRussell · 17/07/2019 10:16

Well, there were 50ish girl Baileys and 500ish boy Baileys last year. So.........

DCIRozHuntley · 17/07/2019 10:19

Just had a look and Bailey is indeed more popular for girls thesedays, especially in the US. I stand corrected on that.

Still, I do hate this thing that a girl being "boyish" is aspirational but a boy being feminine isn't.

BertrandRussell · 17/07/2019 10:21

And a name never moves from girl to boy. It’s worth considering why.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2019 10:22

Are actual girls and actual boys the same as girls and boys?

Agree with DCI about names like James and Bailey. If James Surname turns up for an interview, the interviewer will be expecting a man, not a woman. Not the best start to an interview.

If Stevie Surname turns up, the interviewer will be expecting a man or a woman, and the interview will start on a better note.

This times your whole life.

DCIRozHuntley · 17/07/2019 10:28

Haha, MikeUniformMike, actual boys and actual girls are actually the same as plain old boys and girls. Blame my 8 year old. At least everything isn't literal anymore!

Anyway, there are some lovely girls' names suggested here.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2019 10:49

Glad I tailored my reply. :-)
Actual isn't as bad as literally.
I sometimes work with people younger than me. Sorry I literally mean I actually work with actual people who are really really literally really really younger than myself, and I am literally shtruggling to pick up their actual language. Actual things are literally no longer Great or Fine, they're Perfect. If I say something, it's Correct. Glad you think so colleague who is literally half my actual age. Yes is no longer Yes, it's Absolutely.
Where's Pedant's Corner?

Why do girl's names not become boy's names? Probably for the same reason as when careers become considered girl's jobs, boys are no longer encouraged to do them.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2019 10:56

Jay?

ChillyB · 17/07/2019 11:00

I agree with @BertrandRussell

PianoPiano · 17/07/2019 12:51

Sorry bertrand I was trying to be sarcastic ( and failed!)

Giving a girl a "tomboy" name raises her status, giving a boy a "girly" name lowers a boy's status.

unicornsprinklesss · 17/07/2019 18:10

Hiya, my sister decided on Wren!!!
I think Scout and Wren sound good together :)
