I am obsessed with the name Rory for a girl.
DP pulled a face.
Is it worth trying to convince him or is the name terrible?
Your thoughts on the name please!!

Rory as a nickname sounds cute for a girl. Aurora or Victoria could work well.

Fatkins · 06/07/2019 22:57

Lorelei or Aurora with NN Rory would be nice. I don't really like it on its own for a girl.

CloserIAm2Fine · 07/07/2019 12:32

As a nickname for a girl it’s fine, but not as a stand-alone name. On its own it’s a boys name

Rory Gilmore was short for Lorelai

grufallosfriends · 07/07/2019 12:34

Even if it's a nickname for Lorelei or Aurora, she'll be known as Rory.

Butterfly84 · 07/07/2019 13:58

Awful for a boy or girl (sorry).

Lavenderblues · 07/07/2019 15:12

There are quite a few people who struggle with the pronunciation of R. Rory is very tricky to pronounce for them!

But as regards gender, I think it's cute for a girl and it reminds me of Gilmore.

SparklyMagpie · 07/07/2019 15:18

My DS is Rory and I've never come across girls being named Rory, so I've learned something new today lol

tabbiemoo · 07/07/2019 19:49

Cute but immediately makes me think of Gilmore Girls.

PuffsMummie · 08/07/2019 13:53

Also think if you're going to use it as a NN for Aurora, you should spell it Rorie to differentiate from the boys name.

Namechangedonceagain · 08/07/2019 14:45

Love it! I'd have it short for Lorelei !

Whoops75 · 08/07/2019 15:06

How is it short for Lorelei??

I think it’s a stretch.

missmouse101 · 08/07/2019 15:10

Awful! Hate the 'roar' sound in it anyway and it is a boy's name.

Okyah · 08/07/2019 16:20

I like it especially as a nn for Aurora.

Lavenderblues · 08/07/2019 17:39

How is it short for Lorelei??

Rory Gilmore's full name is Lorelai. I think it's a cute nickname. Better than Lory!

Whoops75 · 08/07/2019 18:51

Rory Gilmore is a fictional person
Definitely doesn’t work in real life imo

Lavenderblues · 08/07/2019 20:54

I know an Aurora who is mainly known as Rory. It works great.

Fatkins · 08/07/2019 21:17

I think with Lorelei / Rory Gilmore, couldn't it have been one of those nns that evolve organically, rather than a usual shortening of Lorelei?

I do love Lorelei in its own right though.

How about Robin / Robyn with Robbie as a nn? Or Rowan? It's unisex I think.

Bellaposey · 08/07/2019 21:20

Cute nickname but not as a full name.

I like it as a nickname for Aurora, but don't get how Lorelei ends up as Rory!

My dog is called Rory, he's a dude (I'm not keen on his name really, I'd have called him something else if I'd got him as a puppy, but he was a rescue).

TumbleTwit · 09/07/2019 13:58

Thanks all. Suspected it would be a marmite name and good to have it confirmed! I don't want my kid to have to deal with a weird name, so I shall cross it off the list.
