Please help! I would love honest opinions about these names. The middle name will be John if that helps. Here's the shortlist of baby names I'm considering that I generated with Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder. Let me know what you think.

Boys
Aaron
Jacob
Sean

I love Aaron and Jacob I’m afraid I really don’t like Sean. I also love Arran with it’s Scottish feel

Owlbert · 02/07/2019 09:14

Not massively keen on any of them but Aaron is slightly nicer to my ears than the other 2

ButterflyOfFreedom · 02/07/2019 09:31

I love Sean! Though might spell it Shaun.
Jacob is nice.
Not as keen on Aaron.

AnonymousP · 02/07/2019 09:38

Joseph
Caleb

Ethan
Nathan

Aaron John is delicious.
You certainly don't want Sean John.

For one thing its very blunt and practically rhymes, and
Sean is either the Irish or Scottish version of John.
Therefore effectively its the same name.
I'm not fussed on Jacob. Seems like a naughty boy type name to me.
As i often make a point of staying on these, though. That's just my opinion and perception. Its not a fact, and
Jacob John do go lovely together.

Divgirl2 · 02/07/2019 10:44

I wouldn't call a baby Sean John, although if your surname is Silver then I can see the appeal.

I actually don't like any of them with the middle name John to be honest. Aaron John is the best, and AJ would probably be what he ended up getting called at school. Jacob John is a bit too alliterative (and I usually like alliterative names).

Thanks everyone. The middle name has to be John, as that’s after hubby’s grandfather. I love all three names, but I don’t know if Sean and John are too similar to go together. Also love Aaron, but am worried someone in a bumps and babies group I go to will think I copied her as this is her sons name! I told her I had a short list of three names, but didn’t say that one of them was the same as her baby name. My nephew is called Jack, so I don’t know if Jacob will be too similar to his name, especially if it got shortened to Jake. Aargh!! We are really stuck, because hubby has rejected all my favourite names and I didn’t like his top choices either, so these three are literally the only names we can agree on. Not sure if it would help to add another middle name before John? as that would be a possibility.

Surname is Dempsey if that helps.. ideas really needed

Sean seems a bit dated. I am not that keen tbh.

Jacob's nice. I wouldn't get too bothered about your nephew being called Jack, it's not the end of the world. I wouldn't rule out because of the possibility of his nickname being Jake. I have two other girl cousins, all three of our names rhyme, never been a problem other than our nan getting a bit muddled!

Aaron is ok, its not really my cup of tea but its a good solid name, and not as popular as Jacob too.

First name and middle name are rarely said together. And your surname is more than one syllable so that should be all good.

Here are some suggestions

  • Aidan
  • Elliott
  • Connor
  • Ellis
  • Reuben
  • Gabriel
  • Rhys

Jacob is plenty different enough from Jack.

Jacob John Dempsey. Great name.

Mum2Be36 · 02/07/2019 12:31

Thanks, it’s really useful to have some different opinions, as we are keeping our name ideas secret from friends and family. I’m due in 4 weeks time, so not much longer to decide!

I prefer Aaron and Jacob but it is very similar to Jack. Could you replace John with Sean as Sean is John in Irish so you are still honouring the relative but using one of the names you love?

Do you like Owen or Caleb? In my head they are similar to your other names x

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2019 18:53

You really can't have Sean John - they are the same name. Well, of course you can but it would be a bit daft.

Jacob is probably too close to Jake.

Aaron is nicest with John as the middle name. I wouldn't worry about having the same name as someone in a baby group, tbh.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 02/07/2019 19:00

Sorry, hadn't seen that John would be the middle name. Aaron sounds best in that case.
Other suggestions:
Gabriel
Leon
Nathaniel
Christian
Anthony
Lewis
Daniel
Zachary
Marcus
Tobias
Caleb
Elliot
Patrick
Harrison
Isaac

Poppkitty90 · 02/07/2019 19:01

Really dislike Sean.
Love Jacob and Aaron

Fatkins · 02/07/2019 20:18

I love Jacob, but am not keen on the others.

I love Seamus though, which is similar to Sean. Or possibly Hamish?

Pinkmalinky · 03/07/2019 17:22

Sean and Jacob don’t go with John at all. I’m not overly keen on any but would probably pluck for Aaron if pushed.
