Nicknames for 'Ophelia"

We recently had our baby girl Ophelia but we are struggling to come up with a cute nickname for her (and yes, we would like a nickname.)

Not keen on Lia...

Any other suggestions? Happy for 'out of the box' ideas too!

Since when did people ask other people to provide a nn for their DC? Yet there are currently at least two such threads.

Nicknames are supposed to evolve naturally, surely? It seems bizarre to me for someone to ask a load of strangers on mn to come up with a nickname for their DC.

Just go with what feels natural to you, or call her by her actual name Hmm Confused

Alternatively get cracking on dc2 - siblingsoften cone up with very creative nicknames for their siblings!

I agree. You named your child Ophelia because you hopefully like it. Why now choose another name for her?

Innersmellbow · 28/06/2019 21:40

Orphie

Cbeebiesrehab · 28/06/2019 23:22

I know two Ophelias-one goes by FiFi and the other by Effie (which happens to be my daughter’s name also)

Pinkfinkle · 29/06/2019 04:50

I wouldn’t personally shorten it incase it sticks forever and she barely knows her full name.

username1724 · 29/06/2019 08:43

Love Effie or Fia?

saffy1234 · 29/06/2019 08:54

Fifi seems the most natural, however nicknames tend to be totally random,my darling boy Joseph is called 'Gooey' by everyone in this house!

I

IVflytrap · 29/06/2019 13:00

Ollie? Fee? Fifi?

whiskeysourpuss · 29/06/2019 13:09

Are you looking for a nickname or a shortening of Ophelia? Because they are very different things.

For example my brother is called Joseph, sometimes he uses the shortening of Joe (his friends etc) & his nickname used by family is Horace.

Lavenderbluess · 29/06/2019 14:41

Often nicknames given by friends are related to the surname. Maybe that might work better than trying to shorten Ophelia?

Kashali · 29/06/2019 14:43

Oppy, Feelya, offie, Fee, feelia, fifi, Fi,

Grufallosfriends · 29/06/2019 15:03

Ophelia is lovely.

But most of these shortenings sound pretty bad and definitely more suited to a poodle! I mean Offie, Fifi? Shock

feelingverylazytoday · 29/06/2019 15:22

I don't understand why you choose a name and then don't want to use it?
The only name that comes to mind for me is Fee, which reminds me of Auntie Fee on youtube.

Cuppa12345 · 29/06/2019 15:25

I know one who is O for short

IncognitaIgnorama · 29/06/2019 15:29

I went to school with an Ophelia. Her nn was "Fungus" (can't actually remember why, though...)

Seriously - why have an official nickname rather than one that just evolves naturally Confused?

MaggieMaeR · 04/04/2020 02:09

I think it’s a bit rude of the mums who can’t understand your wish for a nn or shortened name. It’s very common to want to call your LO something quick & cute. I always called my Violet, Vi or V (although Letty could work too).

For Ophelia, this is one of my very favorite names. I struggled with it for the same reason you are. While I loved it, I couldn’t come up with a proper nickname. But a few out of the box ideas have since come to mind:
Eli (it’s in the name)
Ellie or Ella
Aleah
Filly
O
Lily
Lola

You could even combine syllables with her middle name.
Hopefully you have come up with something you like by now, but if not, maybe you will like some of the above. I would love to hear what you decided on, as I am still regretting naming baby 3 Amelia instead of Ophelia.

@MaggieMaeR that’s a really thoughtful response.
