We’re somehow only two months away from meeting our little girl and I’d ideally like to shorten our list before she arrives.

Opinions on these names to help us do that please? Florence, Mabel, Beatrice, Beatrix and Lucia. Big sister is Violet. Thanks!

Mabel, Mabel and again Mabel!! It's a gorgeous name and my friends Mabel who is 8 is utterly gorgeous.
I also like Beatrice and Beatrix but think Florence is over used these days. I really don't like Lucia and I don't think it goes with Violet.

clary · 04/06/2019 17:37

Ah op I love your choices! Mabel is my fave name, DH wasn't keen tho but I love it. Florence was ds2's girl name so obv I love those two. I also like Beatrice, good Shakespearean heroine. Less keen on Lucia. Violet and Mabel is lovely.

Lucia is beautiful. Either of your preferred pronounciations and either of your middle names. Probably Josephine. It flows.

I think if you pick Beatrix she'll be forever spelling it to folk. I would say Beatrice or Florence.

kaytee87 · 04/06/2019 22:13

I like Beatrice Mabel or Mabel Beatrice

Do not like aurora, Leona, Flora at all.

Don't like Beatrix spelling. I love the way lu-chee-ah sounds but think the pronunciation is open to interpretation and could be annoying for her.

Florence is a bit wet. Love Eilidh but only if you're in Scotland (although maybe doesn't matter as a middle name)

Quite like Josephine but don't like Jo (again wouldn't matter for middle name i suppose)

AmyMaria2 · 04/06/2019 22:28

Florence is the best but would always be Flo x

Watersnail · 04/06/2019 23:45

Lucia Florence
Lucia Beatrice
Beatrice Eilidh
Florence Aurora
Florence Lucia
Mabel Josephine

BlackPrism · 05/06/2019 00:09

Like Beatrix and Lucia but hate all the others.

BlackPrism · 05/06/2019 00:09

Nobody wants to be the 'mabel' to the Violet

happyhillock · 05/06/2019 00:12

Don't like Mabel or Florence

Persea · 05/06/2019 00:14

Beatrix - it just looks better and more interesting

Astronica · 05/06/2019 00:57

Beatrix is my first choice - I love it and love it as Violet's sister. I definitely prefer it over Beatrice. Beatrix is so peppy and fiesty, whereas Beatrice is softer. Beatrix Flora is wonderful!

I also like Florence and Lucia a lot. However I do think all your names work as Violet's sister. I'm not a fan of Mabel at all - just don't like the sounds - however being Violet's sister doesn't really narrow it down IMO because they all work so well.

Middles -
With Lucia both middles work beautifully.
Beatrice/Beatrix - Flora first, then Eilidh 2nd choice. I don't think Aurora or Mabel work as well.
Florence Lucia - lovely! I don't think the others flow as well or sound as beautiful
Mabel - I think Josephine is the only one that works.

Icklepup · 05/06/2019 07:54

Beatrice or Beatrix Flora is lovely!

Beatrice hands down.

Violet and Beatrice are fabulous together.

Hobbesmanc · 05/06/2019 13:54

There's some lovely choices. I love Lucia mainly because I adore the Mapp and Lucia novels of the 1920s. Florence is maybe a little too popular and sadly I still think of Mabel as being a dumpy little aunt.

TatianaLarina · 05/06/2019 14:27

I like Lucia too, but I have an Italian friend called Loo chee a and everyone calls her Loo see a.

NameChangedNoImagination · 05/06/2019 14:29

I love all of them except Beatrice. If I had to choose I'd go for Mabel.

Jessi88 · 05/06/2019 15:22

For a while, I preferred Beatrix where as my husband favoured Beatrice. Now we’re both pretty even on them which doesn’t help lol.

I agree on the middle names for Florence and Mabel. My husband thinks all options sound fine but I only really like a few for each name. Josephine is probably my favourite for Mabel but Violet does have 2 middle names so length is something I’m wary of. The second middle name we’re thinking this time round is the shortening of my great grandmother’s name, which she always went by.

I don’t dislike it but Flo isn’t my favourite shortening and I think we’d get that with Florence therefore we’re rethinking that. We used Felicity for Violet’s middle name because I couldn’t stand the shortening, Flick. As you’ve guessed she’s Violet Felicity. She also has a 4 letter second middle name which is also meaningful.

Although it probably should, the potential pronunciation issues with Lucia isn’t putting me off. I think we could shorten it to Chi or CiCi to help too - once my husband has figured out which pronunciation he prefers as I love either lol.

WDYT of Evangeline? Is it too frilly and long? Flora or Mabel as the first middle? The second is 4 letters and 1 syllable long.

Lucia is my favourite
Evangeline is also very nice
Strongly dislike Flora

Jessi88 · 05/06/2019 18:27

Thanks everyone! We’ve narrowed things down a bit. I’d still like to eliminate either Beatrice or Beatrix before she arrives because they’re so similar that I don’t think seeing her will help anyway.

Beatrice/Beatrix Aurora
Beatrice/Beatrix Flora
Beatrice/Beatrix Mabel

Evangeline Flora
Evangeline Mabel

Lucia Florence
Lucia Mabel
