What do you all think of these names? These aren't my names but my sisters top 3. She asked me to post as she doesn't have an account on here but wanted others opinions as I'm 'too biased'.

For a girl:
Alaska
Effie
Phoenix (nix/nixie)

For a boy:
Artemis
Jasper
Leo

Leo and Jasper are nice. Alaska is a good name for a husky.

Astronica · 28/05/2019 02:52

Girl: 1. Phoenix, 2 Effie 3 Alaska
Boy: 1. Leo and Jasper equal - love both, 3. Artemis.

Cruelstepmother · 28/05/2019 03:13

I think they all sound rather pretentious! Especially Artemis for a boy. It sounds like you decided to name him after your favourite aftershave.

Icklepup · 28/05/2019 03:24

I like Artemis for a girl and Phoenix for a boy

Marchitectmummy · 28/05/2019 04:29

Sorry everyone but many of you are repeating the same incorrect information Artemis is a female goddess however is a boys name in Greece and a pretty common one at that, a boy won't be picked on for having that name. Google is not always your friend.

In saying that I don't like the name.

HUZZAH212 · 28/05/2019 04:42

Well Effie is a nn for Euphemina so it depends on if she wants to go with that? Alaska as pp stated I'd think of a dog. Nixie/nix I would hate as a nn (all the kids will call her knickers). Artemis is a bit meh imo, Jasper I also know two dogs with the name. Leo is nice but very popular a few years back if that bothers her.

HappyDinosaur · 28/05/2019 05:28

Spent much of my childhood living in Greece, never met or heard of a male Artemis, it was always used as a female name. Leo is nice for a boy and Effie for a girl.

BasicsOnly · 28/05/2019 05:46

For the girls Alaska is the only one I like. Effie no, as it's too close to effin. I also like Artemis for a girl.

I really like Jasper.

florascotia2 · 28/05/2019 08:26

Artemis is a female name (in spite of Artemis Fowl); as others have said, it's the name of one of the most famous Greek goddesses: virgin, huntress, man-hater (on the whole), protector of women in childbirth. Connections with the moon (and female monthly cycles) and with the underworld.

Artemios is a Greek male name used today; also the name of an early Christian martyr, St Artemios (or Artemius).

As 'Artem', the same name is used in Russia, Ukraine etc.

Fulltimemummy85 · 28/05/2019 09:45

Jasper, Leo or Effie none of the rest

LouiseMiltonSpatula · 28/05/2019 10:15

Effie is quite sweet. I really don’t like Phoenix, sorry! Alaska is ok but a bit too out there for me.

I like Jasper and Leo. Artemis is a girls’ name to me, but I like the sound of it.

taylorlynn · 28/05/2019 10:37

None of the girls names are my taste but I love Jasper & Leo.

Teddybearhunter · 28/05/2019 11:42

@marchitectmummy I’m not convinced schoolchildren research international usage of names before deciding how to react

Clubbercised · 28/05/2019 12:10

Hmmmmm none of the girl names are my cup of tea. But if you pushed me I'd say Effie. I don't like it as a stand alone name though, and think it will date badly. I'd go with Josephine with NN Effie.

I like Leo and Jasper, but am not in love with either. I think Artemis is completely OTT. How about Atticus? Still unusual, but not so OTT, I don't think.

NeverSayFreelance · 28/05/2019 12:19

Alaska and Phoenix are both nopes imo. Effie is fine.

Jasper feels old fashioned, Leo is fine. Artemis is traditionally a female name as in the Goddess but Artemis Fowl is male so I suppose it depends on what you associate it with

If she's keen on "Nix" and has a thing for goddesses, Nyx might be better for the Goddess of Night. But I'd still prefer Effie.

Pinkflowersx · 28/05/2019 12:51

For a girl:
Alaska....this isn't a name and I think baked Alaska
Effie....this is a nickname for Euphimia and I think of 'ffing' like swearing. It's horrible.
Phoenix (nix/nixie)....no, terrible sorry.

For a boy:
Artemis...this is a goddess...
Jasper...wet poncy name
Leo...Nice

Marchitectmummy · 28/05/2019 13:03

@Teddybearhunter I am sure you are right, but as Artemis is a Greek name, not a British one why would a British child think it's a girl's name. Not many children know who the Greek gods are.

Treaclepie19 · 28/05/2019 13:32

Effie and Jasper are lovely.

Estellastar · 28/05/2019 14:30

Love Jasper.
Alaska is ok.
Love Artemis but is a girls’ name to me. I know a Greek girl named Artemis

Magnificentbeast · 28/05/2019 14:52

Effie was on my list but DH didn't like it.

Of the boys' names I like Leo the best.

Hobbesmanc · 28/05/2019 16:59

Leo is lovely. Jasper is the name of too many friends puppies. The movie of Artemis Fowl is due out (and isnt there a character also called Effie? ) either way that would make me swerve them

Alaska is a cheap rip off fried chicken joint round here so no.

sergeilavrov · 28/05/2019 17:10

My feedback (she should entirely pick what she likes and what she feels suits the baby - congratulations to her!)

Alaska - gives me Governor Palin/Tea Party vibes and wouldn't be my choice
Effie - I get the Skins thing but given the generational difference not likely a problem - I'd maybe opt for Euphemia that's a lie i wouldn't but you get my point and shorten to Effie as I like the name
Phoenix (nix/nixie) - not keen on the nickname

Artemis - yes this is nice, be prepared for the nickname 'arty'. V V American.
Jasper - I like this until the age of 8 and again above 50, but I have the same issue with Noah
Leo - probably would go for Leon or Leopold and shorten another lie, I wouldn't shorten it

jojojowo · 29/05/2019 18:58

Like Jasper and Leo not keen on any of the others

username009 · 29/05/2019 19:00

Love every single one of the girls names, all on my list.

Not keen on any of the boys names though, sorry!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/05/2019 19:02

Artemis for a girl is the only one I like.
