First impressions of Nell?

Lovely as a shortened version, awful on the bc.

nellyitsme · 24/05/2019 20:19

As you might guess this is one of my nn. However, I prefer Helen/Ellen/Eleanor rather than the nickname - she can then decide herself whether she wants to be known as Nell. I only allow my close family to call me Nell.

citrine10 · 24/05/2019 20:28

Just beware 'Nellie the elephant'...

Poochnewbie · 24/05/2019 20:33

Love Nell. The Nell I know gets Nella Bella or Nells Bells and I think it’s really cute.

redexpat · 24/05/2019 20:35

The old woman in round the twist!

audweb · 24/05/2019 20:39

My daughters name is Nell. That’s short for her full name but if I shared that it would be a total giveaway 😂 I’ve only ever had lovely responses to her name and I think it’s a lovely classic but relatively unusual. Never come across another one yet.

BikeRunSki · 24/05/2019 20:42

Love it. My best friend and my grandmother were both Nells; Eleanor and Helen respectively.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 24/05/2019 20:43

Lovely

Petalflowers · 24/05/2019 20:45

Sorry, don’t like it (but I can see i’m In the minority’s).

Astronica · 25/05/2019 04:18

Love it.

Love it as a name on its own, and as a nn for Helena, Penelope, Eleanor, Ellen, Leonora etc. I don't think Nelly is inevitable, and if anyone uses it you have to be prepared to stop it in its tracks.

IWouldBeSuperb · 25/05/2019 04:50

I adore Nell, but I do think Nelly/ Nellie is inevitable unfortunately, and I'm not a fan (Nelly the Elephant / Smelly Nelly made me cross it off my shortlist).

Disagree a nickname can be stopped in its tracks - and do you really want to spend your life policing every name-based interaction?!

TatianaLarina · 25/05/2019 08:36

I’ve never heard my friend Nell being called Nelly. Nella but never Nelly.

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/05/2019 08:37

Absolutely love it.

SundayMorningSun · 25/05/2019 09:11

I know a lovely Nell. She's just Nell, not short for anything. I think it's a sweet but grown-up name.

itseasybeingcheesy · 25/05/2019 22:22

I know a Nell, that's her full first name rather than a nickname and it's a lovely name, very sweet and simple.

MarieToulouseBerlioz · 25/05/2019 22:25

I really like it :) as a pp suggested i also like it as a nn for eleanor

MsMustDoBetter · 25/05/2019 22:30

Absolutely beautiful. I'd have liked a little Nell myself.

Poppins2016 · 25/05/2019 22:30

I imagine the nickname Nelly would be inevitable. If you use a 'long' name you might avoid this, as Nell would become the routinely used nickname (or perhaps I'm just trying to persuade you to use a 'long' name because I like the potential for varying them when a child is old enough to decide.. hmm).

Hobbesmanc · 30/05/2019 13:00

I love the name Nell - probably as a diminutive of Elinor or Eleanor

BeckyAnnLeeman · 30/05/2019 13:12

Nell is nice and fine as a name in its own right.

Nellie is awful though.

Antonin · 30/05/2019 13:27

I hate Nellie as a nn. Do you know the rhyme Nellie Blye?
Nell is a pretty name but people do see to have the urge to lengthen very short names — Nellie
