Laura or Gemma?

We are expecting DC2 shortly and two of the girl names we are considering are:

Laura
Gemma

Which do you prefer? DC1 is a boy and has a very traditional boys name (5 letters), so we want a nice short traditional girl's name to go with his name.

I'm leaning towards Laura, but my OH prefers Gemma. Any comments on either name would be appreciated.

Thanks

As a Lorna. I hate Laura with a passion. So definitely Gemma

Laura at a push, but both very dated and boring (imo).
What about:

Lucy
Amy
Jessica
Lauren
Caitlin
Sarah
Sophie
Anna
Annie
Kate
Katie
Leah
Jade
Brooke
Rose
Hannah
Erin

Laura, quite a classic name in my opinion. Gemma less so. Though I know an absolutely lovely and beautiful Jemma.

SallyWD · 20/05/2019 14:34

I can't choose, I love them both. Both underused at the mo.

Divgirl2 · 20/05/2019 14:42

Laura is a traditional name, Gemma is as traditional as Bananarama or lycra.

So for that reason Laura - it's the only one that fits your own brief.

Fulltimemummy85 · 20/05/2019 17:18

Laura or Jena not Gemma, it's a 90's name

RuffleCrow · 20/05/2019 18:29

Div, Gemma dates back to the 14th century. I don't want to say you're living up to your name, but well...

DramaAlpaca · 20/05/2019 20:00

Laura

Sexnotgender · 20/05/2019 20:02

Of the 2 I prefer Laura.

cookiechomper · 20/05/2019 20:03

I like Gemma. Laura is too bland in my opinion.

I prefer Lauren to Laura, but don't like Gemma, so it would have to be another vote for Laura out of the two.

EmmaC78 · 20/05/2019 21:54

Laura definately.

Sophronia · 20/05/2019 21:55

Laura is more classic and traditional than Gemma (in the UK)

finallychangedmyusername · 20/05/2019 21:55

Both are so refreshing to hear! Today I marginally prefer Laura but they are both great.

mollpop · 20/05/2019 21:57

Definitely Laura

Chocmallows · 20/05/2019 21:57

Laura, or better still Lauren, Lorna or Lara.

pilates · 20/05/2019 22:00

Gemma

PinkieTuscadero · 20/05/2019 22:02

With Gemma I'm pulled between thinking about the va va voom elegance of Gemma Arterton and the va va voom inelegance of Gemma Collins.

I think I prefer Laura.

LadyGAgain · 20/05/2019 22:04

I think Laura is one of the most beautiful names. I had it on my list but as I have a bestie of the same name we decided on another. I truly love it.
Gemma is ugly to look at IMO. Sorry!

klendraa · 20/05/2019 22:05

Laura

FawnDrench · 20/05/2019 22:12

Laura - definitely - timeless and elegant.

Butterfly3005 · 20/05/2019 22:21

Personally, I would say neither. Mainly because I have two cousins who are sisters named Laura and Jemma and they are vile people!!

lostlobster · 20/05/2019 22:24

I think Gemma is a really lovely name
