That's an unusual surname, in Scotland Gillies is more common. I might be inclined to choose something Scottish - Findlay, Rory, David?

Is Gillis pronounced with a hard G?

Keepaddingpets · 17/05/2019 07:11

I was going to say Daniel then realised Dan just sounds rude with the surname Grin

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 17/05/2019 07:52

Andrew? But I'm thinking of a Scottish pronunciation so may not work depending on where you are.

See, I think that names ending in an 's' or 'x' sound don't sound nice with Gillis as both end with similar sounds. Like James Gillis, Max Gillis. Do other people think this too, or am I over thinking it? I like James and Max as names, but I'd ruled them out for that reason.

It's a hard 'g' like in gate.

Lots of great names but the best of them (in my opinion) have already been used by relatives... In one case on a pet.... Grrrr.

What is rude about Dan Gillis? Am I being naive here....

I wouldn't stress about it too much honestly. My son is called Ellis (which I probably wouldn't use with Gillis Grin) and our surname has a double 'L' in it too. Apparently my MIL thought there were too many L's in his name (made no difference whatsoever, we still named him it)
My name rhymes with my married name and it took me a while to get used to it, it does sound a bit of a mouthful lol but you don't use your surname that often really.
