It was a top 10 name for boys in England and Wales a few years ago. I don’t like it.

puma84 · 11/05/2019 23:27

Love Riley. Only know one.

Zofloramummy · 11/05/2019 23:30

My dcat is called Riley, it’s a good cat name. Humans I’m not so keen on it.

puma84 · 11/05/2019 23:55

@Zofloramummy you do Realise it's a human name don't you? Felix, socks and fluffy is a cat name 🙄

Zofloramummy · 12/05/2019 00:18

Yes I do know it’s a human name. Many people call their pets human names! And in my humble opinion I like Riley as a cat name. I’m not keen on it as a human name. Probably because the child I know with the name is a naughty little sod.

Bumblebeesmum · 12/05/2019 00:38

Awful

puma84 · 12/05/2019 00:52

@Zofloramummy ahhh because a name defines the child and it'll automatically be a naughty boy?...right I get ya!

Batshit crazy. Heard it all now 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄

YerAWizardHarry · 12/05/2019 00:54

There's 2 Riley's in my sons class at school and I think 2 more in the same primary. We're in Scotland its very popular. I'm sure it was in the top 5 the year DS was born (2013)

TheMadGardener · 12/05/2019 01:04

Ex-primary teacher here. It's true that Riley is a bit of a "naughty" boy's name! Not saying all Rileys are bad, but in 24 years of teaching there were certain names which tended to belong to naughty children. However, I think these change over the years. Twenty years ago the naughty boys were called Connor, Luke or Aaron. These days they're called Riley, Jaxon, Jake, Ethan. Girls called Riley tend to be well-behaved, though! light-hearted but every teacher knows names they can never use for their own kids!

Zofloramummy · 12/05/2019 01:16

Of course a name doesn’t define a child but we all have associations with names. In my childhood I was bullied by a girl called Helen. Perfectly nice name but I wouldn’t call a child Helen because I associate that with someone who wasn’t very nice.
Riley I associate with a naughty boy and my cat. That doesn’t make me batshit or crazy.

floraloctopus · 12/05/2019 01:51

Puma84 I assume you have a child called Riley? Grin

floraloctopus · 12/05/2019 01:53

Felix, socks and fluffy is a cat name 🙄

I know a Felix. Two legs, two arms, goes to school. I think he might be human....

Tavannach · 12/05/2019 02:07

Nice enough but I think of it as a girl's name.

@floraloctopus nope I don't. I only know one and it's a friends step child.

ReginaPhalange89 · 12/05/2019 09:39

Thanks all. Don't think I like it enough to use it , but I'll keep it on the list for now and come back to it .

Boys names are so so difficult. We're struggling to find many that we both like 🙈

StillIRise87 · 12/05/2019 09:44

Its a surname or an American girls name. It will date badly IMO.

MercyBodle · 12/05/2019 11:19

Definitely American in vibe, and though a unisex name I feel it's used mostly for girls these days.

TildaTurnip · 12/05/2019 14:49

2017 ONS statistics on darkgreener.com show it is still most dominantly a name given to boys:

RILEY (boys): Up from 535th to 43rd
RILEY (girls): Up from 1755th to 260th

TildaTurnip · 12/05/2019 14:50

And hardly ever spelled with two Ys
RYLEY (boys): Up from 1765th to 996th
RYLEY (girls): Up from 3795th to 3229th

Outofinspiration · 12/05/2019 14:52

I love it for both a boy or a girl. But it is quite 'chavvy'.

Definitely spelt Riley though, not Ryley, or worse I have seen, Rylee.

Yinderling · 12/05/2019 14:56

It has a very whiney sound to me

MummyBear2352 · 12/05/2019 15:26

I know tons of Riley’s.

userabcname · 12/05/2019 15:28

I like the name Riley.

sanityisamyth · 12/05/2019 15:32

Awful
