I quite like the name Ayla (pronounced Isla) but I’m not sure wether it just seems like a misspelled version of Isla.

This is the name of the heroine in Clan of the Cave Bear (and the sequels) - is this the inspiration? I like it.

sonlypuppyfat · 06/05/2019 18:09

Would she ever meet her Jondalar

Babyfoal · 06/05/2019 18:09

It's fine. I know a Turkish woman with this name

LittleCandle · 06/05/2019 18:12

I wouldn't pronounce it Isla, so if Isla is what you want, spell it that way. Otherwise it will be Aay-la.

ShinyTheMom · 06/05/2019 18:12

Gorgeous!

rodentattack · 06/05/2019 18:18

sonlypuppyfat 😂😂😂

TheWashingMachine · 06/05/2019 18:19

Are you Arabic?

NameChangedNoImagination · 06/05/2019 18:19

Boring af

NameChanginator · 06/05/2019 19:06

It looks like a misspelled version of Isla. Well, it doesn't - it looks like you should pronounce it ay-la (as spelt). But if you want it to be pronounced like Isla I think it will seem like you can't spell that name.

Elllicam · 06/05/2019 19:08

I like it, I would say Ay-La too though.

Divgirl2 · 06/05/2019 19:08

I do like it, but given Isla's current popularity I think she'll have a lifetime of spelling out her name and people thinking it's a younique version.

Shame, because as I said, I quite like it. That said I'd pronounce it aye-la, which isn't how I pronounce Isla (which in my (Scottish) accent is more like isle-ah).

AuntieStella · 06/05/2019 19:15

I think most people would pronounce this ay-la, not eye-la

As if they heard eye-la, they'd spell it Isla.

I know I wouldn't have the patience or good nature to be forever explaining

Shadow1234 · 06/05/2019 19:39

I would also pronounce it as Ay-la. If you want Isla pronounciation, then might be better to go with Isla spelling. (lovely name btw).

Cookit · 06/05/2019 19:59

I would probably wonder if you were just trying to use an alternative spelling for Isla.

PhysaliaPhysalis · 06/05/2019 20:02

I would pronounce it Ay-la, like the Maccabees song 'Ayla'

HoppyHop · 06/05/2019 20:35

I know an Ayla, she's 11 (& lovely!). Her family pronounce it Ay-la. Great name.

Likeagibbon · 06/05/2019 21:10

From your title I was going to ask if this is to be pronounced like Isla but as you already answered that then yes it does look like a mis spelling of Isla! Have you considered Arya? (If you like the look of the other name and would consider a different name?)

CloserIAm2Fine · 06/05/2019 21:58

I would pronounce Ay-la and think of the Clan of the cave bear woman

Bumblebeesmum · 06/05/2019 22:01

I assumed ay-la also

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 06/05/2019 22:03

I’d say Aye-la too but I do quite like it.

justanidiotagain · 06/05/2019 22:05

It's a Turkish name actually. And hugely popular right now. I know 4 of them although only 2 are actually Turkish, the other 2 are south asian.

Heartofglass12345 · 06/05/2019 22:17

I know of two Ayla-mae's
I like Ayla on its own but not hyphenated but I would also pronounce it aye-la

Still18atheart · 06/05/2019 22:18

Never heard it before. I really like it

justanidiotagain · 06/05/2019 22:50

It's a beautiful name but way too popular right now as well as the Scottish Isla too.

pipsqueakthethird · 07/05/2019 00:13

I know an Ayla, pronounced Ay-la.

It will definitely get confusing pronunciation wise.

Isla is ubiquitous. Not sure that giving a child the same name but awkwardly spelled is a great idea.

Ayla is a nice word but it's dull because there are so so so many children with similar names - Mia, Mya, Maya, Myla, Isla, Arla, Raya, Layla, etc etc. It's just a bit done I think and not very unique or "strong" sounding as a name. It's fine though. It's inoffensive.
