Hello,

Growing up I’ve had to deal with people’s preconceptions of me because of my name. Upon just hearing my name people just assume I’m a “chav”, which infuriates me. However when they meet me they are surprised to see that I don’t fit their mental description.

My name is a well-known French name, but unfortunately here it has negative connotations. My name has given me such grief in my life that I’ve even thought of changing it. But now as I’m older it’s just too much paperwork.

I’m pregnant now, and will do anything to avoid giving my child the same fate. I could select a typical classic name like Sarah/Jane etc. Though at the same time I don’t really like those names.

Please could you tell me if any of my shortlist are even a tiny bit “chavvy”?

And trust me I hate this whole concept of “chav” but I don’t know how else to phrase it.

My shortlist:

Florence
Jasmine
Harriet
Lara
Flora
Clara
Madeleine
Anabelle
Lola

Thanks

@Ihateironinganything I love Matilda!

Purplehammer · 04/05/2019 14:22

Florence will be shortened to Florrie or Flo.
Please no.

BlueMerchant · 04/05/2019 14:32

Harriet and Matilda are a bit common nowadays.
My favourite is Clara.
(I 'get' what people mean by Lola being chavvy- but I do love it)
Talia is definitely chavvy.

yoshismother · 04/05/2019 14:35

Jasmine and Lola are chavvy imo.

Marty93 · 04/05/2019 15:53

I think all names are lovely although Lola does remind me of my dog :) but it is still a pretty name. I love Florence, and shorten it to Flo! So cute!

Sparklysunflower · 04/05/2019 16:00

I also agree that Lola and Jasmine are quite 'common'.

diddl · 04/05/2019 16:01

I wonder if Lola Parker Bowles will ever be thought of/referred to as "chavvy"?

Sessy19 · 04/05/2019 16:07

@diddl, her name probably will be

Timmythyme · 04/05/2019 17:26

None of them are ‘chavy’ but Lola does sound like a nom de plume for a prostitute. Like Clara best from your list.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 04/05/2019 18:19

@Purplehammer Flora is also shortened to Flo

MollyHuaCha · 04/05/2019 18:49

Florence - lovely
Jasmine - nice
Harriet - lovely
Lara - nice
Flora - ok, but it's a margarine too
Clara - lovely

Madeleine - lovely, but it's heavily associated with poor Madeleine McCann
Anabelle - lovely - I prefer Annabel or Annabelle as spellings
Lola - it's a diminutive for Laura, Laurence, Charlotte

PinaColadaPlease · 04/05/2019 18:56

I want going to say avoid Lola and Jasmine but see you’ve already ruled them out. Matilda is very popular at the moment, certainly where I live.

I like your list generally but live Clara, such a pretty name.

BertrandRussell · 04/05/2019 19:03

I like Clare better than Clara and it’s much more unusual these days.

MillicentMartha · 04/05/2019 19:22

I thought your name was going to be Michelle, but that’s from another era!

The Annabels that I know are quite posh.

My favourite on your list is Clara.

ooft · 04/05/2019 19:27

Not Jasmine but all the rest are lovely! Your name isn't Chardonnay is it?! sorry - I've always hated my name too xx

littlecabbage · 04/05/2019 19:31

I would avoid Jasmine and Lola.

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 04/05/2019 19:32

I thought your name might be Adelle but as that hasn't been mentioned it can't be!

Florence - not chavvy but quite common now
Jasmine - nice but diminutive Jas a bit chavvy
Harriet - like
Lara - love, graceful yet strong
Flora - margarine
Clara - kids TV character
Madeleine - McCann
Anabelle - bit preppy
Lola - like, but I too know a dog called Lola!
Smile

Hi everyone,

Just managed to catch up on everyone’s comments.
Thank you all for responding, you have all been so helpful.
I’ve now ruled out: Lola, Jasmine, Harriet, Annabelle, Talia, Lily from the list.

I’m now thinking between Florence, Flora, Clara, Lara and Madeleine.

Thanks everyone.

I'm sorry but the name Lola just reminds me off EastEnders 😂😂😂

HeronLanyon · 04/05/2019 22:37

All second list lovely !

girlsname · 05/05/2019 01:43

I'd definitely avoid Jasmine as that is very chavvy, and possibly Lola and Clara. Though Lola is actually a lovely name!

girlsname · 05/05/2019 01:45

Harriet, Lara and Annabelle are definitely not chavvy at all. The people I know with those names all go or went to private schools!

Ladymargarethall · 05/05/2019 06:49

Girls name how old are they? Look at babies being born with those names and you might get a different picture.

wizzler · 05/05/2019 07:14

Madeleine, beautiful timeless name

Ihateironinganything · 05/05/2019 10:40

@sessy19 can I ask where you live as you said most of the names on my list are chavvy.

Which names did you think were chavvy in your area?
