What do you think of the name Ethel?

Is it too old fashioned?

What middle name would go with it?

Opinions and ideas please.

Meet Ethel....not the sharpest knive in the drawer!

Ethel
RosieMapleLeaf · 01/05/2019 04:04

No. That was my Granny's name and she hated it with a passion. Always asked to be called Mrs rather than her first name, even by her friends.

llangennith · 01/05/2019 04:07

Ethel and Gladys are old names that should never be revived.

Alicewond · 01/05/2019 04:09

If you want to have a 80 year old baby sure :)

HeronLanyon · 01/05/2019 04:24

I like it but wouldn’t want to be called it.
What about Esther ? Similar vibe but a little less of a challenge?

Singlenotsingle · 01/05/2019 04:40

Ethel? Horrible!

Durgasarrow · 01/05/2019 05:00

Are you kidding? This would not even be a good name for a dog.

flumpybear · 01/05/2019 06:28

It's a marmite name, my grandmothers name too - and honestly I think it's awful. Don't forget st school she'll be called Effel by those who pronounce th as an f

Happyandglorious · 01/05/2019 06:53

Ethel to me is the ultimate old biddy name. But like pp said def a marmite name. Personally, I can't hear it without thinking of Ethel from Eastenders.

MondeoFan · 01/05/2019 07:12

I love old fashioned names I have 2 DDs myself with old ladies names but I'm just not sure about this one.
I think it's the sound F-all
I think there are better names out there

margaritasbythesea · 01/05/2019 07:16

My Grandmother was called Ethel and hated it.

EdithWeston · 01/05/2019 07:24

It's just as frumpy as Edith was not so long ago.

I really don't think it's any harsher-sounding than any other girls name that contains a 'th' or endin 'el'

Moonbea · 01/05/2019 09:17

Thanks for all of your opinions, I have showed the other half who was insisting on the use of this name.

Now he's not so sure, so hopefully he will drop that suggestion!

I think it’s a beautiful name, but that’s only because the Ethel I know is lovely

Sassy306 · 01/05/2019 09:22

I know an Ethelia. She gets called Ethel sometimes and Ettie. Shes 14 and she loves her name :)

floraloctopus · 01/05/2019 10:32

I like Ettie as a nickname for Henrietta, Ethelia is a good name too - softer than Ethel.

AGoodWench · 01/05/2019 10:38

I prefer Edith (or even Enid!)

Elsie is similar.

WeaselsRising · 01/05/2019 10:46

Ethel is the ugliest name of all time.

AGoodWench · 01/05/2019 10:51

Gertrude is worse imo but it does have the cuter nicknames Gertie and Trudie.

Summerwalk · 01/05/2019 11:44

Too try hard/hipster type name that is really, really terrible.
Would you want to be called Ethel?

Antonin · 01/05/2019 13:52

I always think of ethyl alcohol.
Doesn’t sound nice to me and what if she has a lisp?

Tutulafromage · 01/05/2019 13:54

One of them old fashioned names that has not aged well.

I had an old next door neighbour called Ethel and she was the most miserable woman to walk the earth.

Soubriquet · 01/05/2019 13:57

I’m not keen on Ethel

Prefer Edith personally

Still18atheart · 01/05/2019 14:01

Dreadful your dd - it reminds me of miserable cantankerous old ladies

Nanasueathome · 01/05/2019 14:01

I’m not young and so a lot of these ‘comeback’ names bring up an image of someone I know
Ethel, to me, is a woman in a pinny and turban, smoking and drinking in the local pub on a Saturday night
Not really a name I would use for a baby
