Evening,

Name changed as could be outing. Long time poster and lurker on baby names....

We are expecting our first child, a boy, our surname is Jackson.

We love the name Jesse for a boy but then his name would be Jesse Jackson like the famous one (and we are white, not sure if this makes it different or not.....).

What do you think??

Marmite27 · 14/04/2019 19:47

I’d avoid it tbh.

ToastyFingers · 14/04/2019 19:48

I wouldn't worry, I went to school with a Steve McQueen and people did rip the piss.

ToastyFingers · 14/04/2019 19:48

I meant sorry, not worry.

DramaAlpaca · 14/04/2019 19:49

I've no idea who Jesse Jackson is so it wouldn't bother me if I liked the name.

EL8888 · 14/04/2019 19:50

I don’t think it’s a good idea lm afraid

Summersun89 · 14/04/2019 19:56

I don't think it's a good idea at all...poor kid.

Expressedways · 14/04/2019 19:56

Sorry but I wouldn’t. I think bad enough that it’s a well known name, even worse when it’s a white family using the name of a famous black civil rights activist. But then again I live in the US where Jesse Jackson is considerably more well known than in the U.K.

LemonSqueezy0 · 14/04/2019 19:59

No... And by asking, you've already acknowledged that it is odd and an unfortunate name choice for you to make.

How about Micheal? Wink

MikeUniformMike · 14/04/2019 20:01

or Jermaine?
Jaxon and Jack are popular ...

daisypond · 14/04/2019 20:03

I wouldn’t. Never heard of Micheal. Jude? Jethro? Jonas?

DramaAlpaca · 14/04/2019 20:17

Of course, that's who Jesse Jackson is - I did know Blush

EdWinchester · 14/04/2019 20:20

Lol.

No.

BackforGood · 14/04/2019 20:23

I wouldn't.
It would just be brought up every single time they had to introduce themselves.

BabyNameQ · 14/04/2019 20:33

Oh goddamit. You are right, I do know this really. I’m just frustrated as other names we like start with a B and then the initial is BJ so they are out too!

I haven’t taken my husbands surname so all of the names we like go with my surname but he wants his surname as the surname (and won’t budge on that) so here we are.

Should have chosen a different husband 😂

I don't know who Jesse Jackson is but I'm assuming by the other replies that he is part of the Jackson 5?
If it helps OP I loved the name Jesse but we went for Dexter in the end. Also on our shortlist were Rafael and... I can't remember the other Blush I'll post it if I remember!

3dogs2cats · 14/04/2019 20:39

Rafael is wonderful.

daisypond · 14/04/2019 20:39

No definitely not part of the Jackson five. The civil rights activist.

MrBobLoblaw · 14/04/2019 20:41

Ah thank you @daisypond. I apologise for my ignorance!

MrBobLoblaw · 14/04/2019 20:42

Ellis! Our other shortlisted name was Ellis. Which I still really love. Rafael Jackson flows best I think and Rafa is a great nn.

DobbyLovesSocks · 14/04/2019 21:11

I mis-read your OP and and thought you wanted to call your baby 'evening' 😳
If you like 'B' names how about 'B Micheal Jackson'?

NutMeghan · 15/04/2019 08:31

No sorry.

I don't think BJ initials are bad, plenty of worse ones eg DIE, FAT, BAD, BO

outpinked · 15/04/2019 16:28

I don’t think he is as well known in the UK. I learnt about MLK in school and Rosa Parks but not Jesse Jackson, that was in later life. I honestly don’t think kids at school will know who he was.

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2019 16:35

I have a “famous name”. It is commented on by about every third person I meet for the first time. And my postman, a lot more often. I know who Jesse Jackson is. I’ve just asked my 10 yo DS, who also knew straight away (he’d lived his entire life in England and had never been to the US). TBH. I’d be more concerned about “ya big jessie” type teasing than anything else.

birdgal4848 · 15/04/2019 22:08

Jesse is a nice name.
Think about it realistically - in 10 years time, the kids that your son goes to school with won’t be that familiar with who MJ is let alone one of his siblings or know his name.
If you like it I think you should go for it. Initially people might have a little comment or something to say but then it will just be your son’s lovely name.

birdgal4848 · 15/04/2019 22:10

OH! He’s not in the Jackson 5!
Cringe....
But either way, I think it’s a nice name.
