If I like Cian and Rory

We had a little boy yesterday - he was a bit of a surprise as the sonographer had said “she” during a recent scan!

We have an irish surname that is difficult to spell so looking for a simpler first name. Doesn’t have to be Irish though.

We like Cian and Rory - would love to know what people think? Also if you have any ideas of similar names that’d be great.

They’re both great! Also like Patrick, Michael, Joseph, Fergal, Niall, Sean, Conor. I think with a tricky to spell surname it might be easier to go with a simpler first name.

Loving Donnacha

Apoiads · 12/04/2019 20:07

Donnacha is a pretty cool boys name isn't it!
You wouldn't mess with a Donnacha lol.

My other name was Jude for a boy and my male cousin told me a boy named Jude would be bullied.
As it turned out, I had a girl!

So no boys to be bullied.

How do you pronounce cian? Is it like Keane or like see-an?

HarrietM87 · 12/04/2019 20:54

starzig neither - it’s KEE-an, emphasis on the first syllable (similar to Liam)

Starzig, we say Cian, but MIL says Keen. She's Irish and lives there, DH is Irish but left 20 years ago

DramaAlpaca · 13/04/2019 23:53

In Ireland Cian can be pronounced Kee-un or Keen, it's regional. I like the two syllable version myself, I don't like the Keen version.

Thanks everyone! We decided to go with Rory in the end.

Nah, it's correct or incorrect. The IA vowel combination should always be pronounced as two syllables.

mathanxiety · 14/04/2019 07:03

Rory is a great name.
