Purely hypothetical as baby number 2 doesn't exist yet, but I've been broody and currently obsessed with unusual period names.

I have an ancestor from about 1900-1910 called Mahala which I think is beautiful, and an Everilda (less so...)

For boys I love Rudyard, but think that might be a passing thing!

So, what other unusual slightly out there period names are there?

Erskine looks lovely written down, but sounds horrible when I say it, i think! Is it er-skin or er-skeen? Neither sounds as lovely as it looks!

@hurrythefuckupgeorge I agree adelaide is gorgeous. Bathsehba is extraordinary!

We also have a 'lovely' in our family too! Luckily she didn't marry a Mr Bottom or the like

My middle name is Mahala!! After my great-great-great grandmother. I've never found anyone outside my Mum's family who has heard of it!!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/03/2019 18:38

I had a great-grandmother called Zillah too, so awesome names obviously run in the family...

Psychologika · 25/03/2019 18:38

My daughter is called Tabitha. Other, similar names I like:

Nell
Bess
Jemima
Beatrice
Florence
Edith

Hope that's a little more helpful 😂

Interesting thread, I'm off to google Victorian names

megrichardson · 25/03/2019 18:50

Sophonisba

ImportantWater · 25/03/2019 18:50

We have a Tryphemia. It’s particularly odd since every other family member is called something like Ann or Harry.

Freaking0ut · 25/03/2019 18:50

We have a Cecily which I think is pretty old, but I’m not sure exactly which era it comes from. Always have lovely compliments on her name and haven’t met another yet!
