I love longer names that have lots of nicknames and love Elizabeth with the nickname Lizzie/Lizzy. Which spelling do you prefer: Lizzie or Lizzy, and why? Thanks in advance.

I have to declare a personal interest and strongly advocate Lizzie! My parents chose Elizabeth for exactly the reasons you mention (plus it was a family name).

They just called me Elizabeth but as I couldn't say it I managed something like Liddee, which ended up being Lizzie.

There were no other Elizabeths in my school and the only ones I've met subsequently were Lizzys (all southern English), so find Lizzie far more uncommon and better at any age - exemplified by pp who described it Lizzy as 'young...cute'. Eugh, sorry!

Also you can spell it on a calculator - 312217. What's not to love?!

@trinnidad I know 4 Lizzie's (pretty common I'd say) and no Lizzy's and I'm from Tyneside (north England) 🤔🤔

Definitely Lizzie, I much prefer ie. I can't bear the name Lucy, people have in the past tried to call me it, but quite like the way Lucie looks...still detest being called it!

Sparkly124 · 23/03/2019 15:42

Lucy is lovely and nicer than Lizzy imo.

As someone who’s called Elizabeth and goes by Lizzi, if this is for your child — let them decide ☺️. When I was little I hated automatically just being called Liz or Lizzie or Lizzy. I already had my given name, and it was like everyone wanted to choose my nickname too. When people stopped calling me Lizzie, I realised I liked Lizzi and started going by that. Sounds no different, but it just felt more like me, and was the spelling I’d chosen, rather than someone choosing for me ☺️ So just be aware that some kids won’t take so well to being given their nickname, as that’s the name that’s up to them to choose really ☺️

Lizzy because Lizzy Bennet

Hightemp · 02/02/2022 15:26

Blubells · 02/02/2022 15:35

Lizzie

I prefer Lizzy, but I usually prefer y spellings to ie in general.

Good point.

Call her Elizabeth and let her nickname develop naturally. She won't need to spell it for years.

Glitteryfootprints · 02/02/2022 19:32

Yes agree on letting her choose a nickname if you absolutely have to call her elizabeth (my name and I hate it) I don’t know anyone called Lizzie that likes it. So many nicer nickname options.

RonCarlos · 02/02/2022 19:36

Elizabeth Bennett is Lizzy and I like this.

But I have a child with a similar sort of name and agree that they'll probably decide themselves anyway...

StopForAMinute · 02/02/2022 19:40

Lizzie

Bundlesofchocforme · 02/02/2022 19:45

How about Libby? Best name ever!

VanillaAndOrange · 08/02/2022 22:00

Lizzie - it's just the more familiar and natural spelling as far as I'm concerned.

Classica · 08/02/2022 22:02

Lizzy because Lizzy Bennet is the most famous Lizzy/Lizzie

Laureatus · 08/02/2022 22:17

@Glitteryfootprints I'm an Elizabeth/Lizzie and I LOVE my name, I think it's the perfect girl's/woman's name 😁

I also know a "Lizzi" which is a bit more of an off piste option.
