Stuck and running out of time

I'm now overdue with DD1 and totally struggling to come up with a name. What do people think of Mara? I like it but it means 'bitter' in Hebrew which puts me off. It's also very uncommon. Alternative is Annie but something's putting me off that too.

Or alternatives similar to the above? We're in Scotland and looking for something Scottish sounding.

Mara is nice. It's unusual but not weird. It's similar to the Uber popular vowel heavy short names like Lara and Layla and Ayla and Ava so think it's a great name for right now. Also the girl in Matilda was called Mara I think, and she is a pretty cool lady.

TatianaLarina · 21/03/2019 10:48

To mar also means to spoil.

What about Cara - means dear/beloved?

Annis, Bonnie, Iona, Innes, Laire, Catriona

Calixtine · 21/03/2019 11:33

I like Mara. More than Annie, which seems s bit nicknamey.

How about Mirren, Morven or Mairi/Mhairi?

kenandbarbie · 21/03/2019 11:35

Cora

Ottessa · 21/03/2019 11:38

I like Mara, and I'd prefer a name with associations of bitterness any day over one with connotations with sickly sweet.

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 21/03/2019 11:46

I like Mara, which surprises me as I don't like Lara, Tara, Layla or Anya. Grin

I love Morven. I also love Malin written down but I'm not sure of the pronunciation.

Stuckforaname1 · 21/03/2019 12:23

I love Cora and Morven but DH doesn't. Mairi is a possibility too.
I think Mara, although uncommon, sounds like a name!

BlueChampagne · 21/03/2019 12:32

I like Mara too - bitter, as in beer, isn't a bad thing Grin. Disappointed there's now pint smiley now.

Otherwise:
Fiona
Eilidh
Shona
Ailsa

BlueChampagne · 21/03/2019 12:33

no pint smiley. Grrrr

ijustdontunderstandher · 21/03/2019 12:34

What about Merrin or Freya?

KirstyT11 · 21/03/2019 12:40

I think mara is lovely!

I dont think a name meaning should put you off as such... I don't think we are that fussed about what our names mean as adults or at all really. It just seems when picking baby names we look at meanings ...speaking from experience here 🙈

Amara is on my shortlist and that is also listed as meaning grace or bitter, or some places say it has a meaning of lovely.... depends which background you look at.

Hope you get sorted with a name and that baby comes soon.

Mmmhmmokdear · 21/03/2019 12:43

Samara? Could shorten it to Mara?

I'd just use Mara if you love it. I don't know anyone who looks up meanings of baby names.

MollyHuaCha · 21/03/2019 13:09

Sorry, to me, this is a mara.

Out of all the names mentioned so far I like Merrin.

I prefer the Merryn spelling but I’m not sure if that chances it ‘being Scottish’

daisypond · 21/03/2019 15:56

Mara is generally Mary in English or there’s Maria if you like the A ending. I don’t dislike Mara but I think Mary is fabulous and not so common these days.

BlueMerchant · 21/03/2019 16:01

Prefer Annie.

pilates · 21/03/2019 16:03

I like Annie

GahWhatever · 21/03/2019 16:08

Mara, Mary, Marie, Maria, Miriam are all linked with the Hebrew Bitter.
So what? All lovely names.
If you love Mara don't let it put you off.

Ricekrispie22 · 21/03/2019 16:22

Moira is similar www.scottishgirlsnames.co.uk/moira/
I also like Merle and Meryl

Similar to Annie:
Annice, which apparently is a variation of Agnes.
Annais
Annes
Annora

DramaAlpaca · 21/03/2019 17:06

Mara means the same to me as it is to MollyHuaCha above. That's all I think of when I hear mara.

Two2tango · 21/03/2019 18:18

Maria is a lovely name. Do it!

MikeUniformMike · 21/03/2019 19:03

I prefer Annie.

AnotherRubberDuck · 21/03/2019 20:57

Amara is on our list but I was put off by the similar meaning.
But then I thought about DC's names and couldn't remember what their meanings were without looking it up. So even though I think meaning is important to me, in reality it's actually not.

Coincidently Bethany nn Annie is also on our list. So good choices OP.
