Keeera or Kyra? Which pronunciation?

chiarazuri · 10/03/2019 14:08

I posted earlier trying to decide between Kyra and Iria. I have now settled on Kyra, Thank you to everyone who helped with their suggestions !! I am very keen to stick with the spelling Kyra because it goes perfectly with our surname. However I am not sure which pronunciation sounds better. Kyra pronounced Keeeeera (like Keira knightley) or, Kyra pronounced like Tyra? I would love to hear your thoughts. And what do you think of the name itself? Like it or not so keen on it?

Thank you!!

Chiara

I would assume it was pronounced ky-ra if I saw it written down. If you want the keera pronunciation, I think you need to go for the Kiera/Keira/Ciara spelling.

kenandbarbie · 10/03/2019 14:15

Yeah kyra would be pronounced like it looks, like sky. If you want ee you'd have to spell it Ciara or keera

MillicentMartha · 10/03/2019 14:17

Ar above. Kyra would be Kigh rah. Keyra or Keira or Ciara for key rah.

If I came across this written down, I would assume it was parents signally they wanted Kyra to rhyme with Tyra, otherwise they would have chosen the traditional Ciara or one of its anglicised versions like Kiera.

Ciara is a solid, classic Irish name. It's not (to me) wildly exciting, but that might be its virtue for you. It's an Emily/Sarah type of name.

BeGoodTanya · 10/03/2019 14:21

Parents SIGNALLING, sorry.

chiarazuri · 10/03/2019 14:35

Thank you everyone for all the advice! Would you prefer Keira, Kyra or the classic Ciara?

I'd assume keeera like the actress Kyra Sedgwick.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/03/2019 15:31

Youve not actually stated how you want pronounced. The golden rule is spell a name how you want it pronounced.
If you want Ky-ra then Kyra. Kira
If you want Kee-ra then Keira.Keera Keyra or ciara

villamariavintrapp · 10/03/2019 15:49

I’d pronounce it K-eye-ra. If your name is Chiara i think the keera pronunciation is a bit confusing/similar, and some of the other spellings are a bit matchy?

chiarazuri · 10/03/2019 15:53

I'm not actually sure how I want it to he spelt yet, depends on what the general consensus is on what sounds better...

If I saw kyra I would think k-eye-ra.
I won’t lie but I don’t like either.

MrsEricBana · 10/03/2019 15:53

I'd def pronounce Kyra as kigh-ra but I wouldn't be choosing either of those names if my name was Chiara. Sorry.

ColeHawlins · 10/03/2019 15:54

Kyra pronounced Keeeeera (like Keira knightley)

Confused
RayaJambalaya · 10/03/2019 15:54

Still prefer Kyra to Keira/Ciara and pronounced as it's written, like Tyra.

jiggsymalone · 10/03/2019 17:31

I agree with MrsEricBana.
Of all the spellings I would go for Ciara, but not if your name is Chiara or if you have an Italian background (which if your name is Chiara I assume you do) as the pronunciation would be confusing for Italian family and friends.

SemperIdem · 10/03/2019 17:40

I’d assume it rhymed with Tyra.

Not sure how you’d get keera from it.

I'm a teacher and come across various 'interesting' spellings of names.

If I came across Kyra then I would pronounce it 'K - eye - ra'.

If you want it to be pronounced like 'K-ee-ra' then it would be spelt: Kiera.

If you like the use of the 'y' then you could spell it: Keyra or Keyrah. I've had a 'Kira' as well.

MumUnderTheMoon · 10/03/2019 23:54

Kyra doesn't have an "ee" sound. If you want that you have to spell it Kiera.

Isadora2007 · 12/03/2019 02:26

Why would you want to use that name if yours is chiara? 🙄

Sessy19 · 12/03/2019 12:33

@Isadora2007, maybe she wants to use a version of her name for her daughter. Is there a law against that??? Boys are given their father’s name all the time without raising a hoohah. What’s your issue with that prospect?

MrsRubyMonday · 12/03/2019 12:43

My sister is a Kira, pronounced K-ee-ra. 99% of people get it right without being told. It's mostly older people who try the K-eye-ra pronounciation first. I think it's a beautiful name and suits her well.

PhilipJennings · 12/03/2019 12:59

I know a Kyra, pronounced Keera. It's not a British name and so it would never occur to me to pronounce it Kigh-ra. "Keera" in its variant spellings is a reasonably commonly used name in many countries, and I think that "eye" sound for "y" only occurs in the English language, so it seems obvious (to me) that it would be Keera.

Lyra, on the other hand, I'd never pronounce Leera, unless I was introduced to someone in a non-English speaking country.
