We've picked our boys name - George - but finding it so hard for girls names. I'd like a name that's strong but also pretty.

Which name would you pick for your daughter out of this list (if you had to!)

Which name is the most awful to you, and why?

Rosa
Honor
Maeve
Minerva
Ophelia
Beatrix
Anastasia
Margot
Thea /Theodosia
Rowena
Emie
Frieda/Frida
Nora
Alexandra
Marcella
Marceline

Thanks!

Beatrix Margot and Nora are my favourites. I really don’t like Thea or Ophelia.

DramaAlpaca · 09/03/2019 22:03

I'd pick Rosa or Alexandra for strong & pretty, and Maeve because it has a beautiful simplicity about it.

I'd be least likely to pick Nora, Margot or Frieda because I think they are all really ugly names, and Thea because it's weak sounding.

Ihavealwaysknown · 09/03/2019 22:21

I’d pick Beatrix, not keen on Anastasia 🤷🏻‍♀️ Good luck op!

Shadow1234 · 09/03/2019 22:39

Rosa is the only one that stands out for me. Short and strong.

MsMustDoBetter · 09/03/2019 22:42

I love Nora.

WarmCoffee · 09/03/2019 22:59

Thanks everyone!

Some mixed opinions, but I think a few names have effectively been ruled out!

I think the nicest ones are Rosa, Margot and Anastasia.

Don't like nora or Minerva... think they just sounds very old lady like... although I do generally like older names.

Beeziekn33ze · 09/03/2019 23:02

Not Emile
I like Alexandra, Lexi for short!

Saffrona · 10/03/2019 02:00

Rosa yes
honor no
Maeve no
Minerva no
Ophelia no
Beatrix no
Anastasia yes
Margot no
Thea no
Rowena no
emie no
Frieda/Frida no
Nora no
Alexandra yes
Marcella no
marceline no

Sessy19 · 10/03/2019 09:20

Rosa - boring, but in a similar vein as George
Honor - I like
Maeve - awful!
Minerva - probably a bit too far away from mainstream George, and VERY Harry Potter
Ophelia - strong perfume, musky
Beatrix - fusty
Anastasia - love!
Margot - yawn
Thea /Theodosia - Thea, or theadora. Dosia makes it sound medical
Rowena - nice, more classic
Emie - looks like Ernie, not keen
Frieda/Frida - monobrow. Hard for a young girl to pull off
Nora - I want to like this one, but I can’t...
Alexandra - about as George as you get
Marcella - Anna Friel
Marceline - Angelina Jolie

Sorry. I guess we just generally have very different tastes

RuthW · 10/03/2019 09:32

I would pick Rosa. Dislike Emmie as It's a shortened version of a real name.

Babyfoal · 10/03/2019 09:37

I like Rowena.

BlueMerchant · 10/03/2019 09:41

Anastasia is lovely. Strong and classy.
Margot is horrendous. 80's middle-aged 'posh' woman with hostess trolley.

Fifthtimelucky · 10/03/2019 10:12

Alexandra is my favourite, (and the most like George, I think). Classic and timeless. Lots of options for shortened versions. Rosa 2nd choice, though I'd probably go for Rosamund or Rosalind formally.

Beatrix, Margot, Thea and Maeve all seem very popular these days, so I suspect will date easily.

Some of the others are a bit flowery.

I quite like Maggie, and think enough time has passed since Thatcher. I know a Maggie ( who is about as unlike Thatcher as you can get (black and in her 20s) and it suits her very. well.

Hate Nora.

katmarie · 10/03/2019 10:41

If you like Thea, what about dorothea?

mrsdavys · 10/03/2019 16:12

Rosa- ok though I do prefer Rose
Honor- absolutely not
Maeve- hate
Minerva- no but nn Minnie would be so cute
Ophelia- no
Beatrix- no
Anastasia- lovely
Margot- lovely
Thea- no
Rowena- no
Emie- too frilly and a bit wet
Frieda/Frida- very dated to me
Nora- no
Alexandra- lovely
Marcella- no
Marceline- lovely

My favourites are Alexandra, Anastasia and Marceline
My least favourites are Emie, Honor and Minerva

SemperIdem · 10/03/2019 21:38

I love the name Honor (which is the correct spelling for the name, for the trying but failing pedants).

Theodosia is dreadful though.

SherlockSays · 11/03/2019 10:59

@WarmCoffee I haven't have any issues with pronunciation at all so far - she's almost 8 months. I have had a couple of people ask me before saying her name if it's 'Tay-a' or 'Thee-a' though so I guess the spelling doesn't make it clears Smile

xdestarx · 11/03/2019 12:04

George and Beatrix are my top boy/girl choices for myself.

Also Like:
Rosa/Rose
Margot
Nora

OK:
Thea
Alexandra
Ophelia
Anastasia

Don't like the rest of them.

daisypond · 11/03/2019 12:57

I like most of your names. I really like Thea and Alexandra and Anastasia.
I strongly dislike Ophelia (because of her story in Hamlet) and Emie - that is a very odd name. Do you mean Emmie or Emmy - short for Emmeline? That's a better name.

MikeUniformMike · 11/03/2019 19:08

Rosa - nice
Honor - ok. Depends on surname.
Maeve - ok
Minerva - not keen
Ophelia - not keen
Beatrix - ok
Anastasia - no. Shades of Grey
Margot - ok. Bit popular.
Thea /Theodosia - no/no
Rowena - nice
Emie - Emu
Frieda/Frida - not keen
Nora - no
Alexandra - nice
Marcella - no
Marceline - no

DidYeeAye · 11/03/2019 19:13

Alexandra is my favourite! That's what my DS would be has he been a DD. Also really like Theodora but not keen on Dora as a nn. Maeve is also a name I really love x

Barrenfieldoffucks · 11/03/2019 19:29

Beatrix

wherehavealltheflowersgone · 11/03/2019 19:32

Love Rosa. Don't like Frida or Nora - ugly or plain sounding to me.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 11/03/2019 20:51

Rosa - quite nice
Honor - no
Maeve - nah
Minerva - no
Ophelia - nice
Beatrix - no
Anastasia - really pretty
Margot - no
Thea /Theodosia - thea yes, theodosia no way!
Rowena - no
Emie - no
Frieda/Frida - no
Nora - no
Alexandra - nice
Marcella - maybe
Marceline - no

Favourites would probably be Anastasia and then Alexandra.

Worst ones are honor, Minerva, beatrix, theodosia, rowena, freida, nora, marceline
