Pretty Scottish girls names

Divgirl2 · 21/01/2019 10:07

We gave DS a very Scottish name with a Gaelic spelling (Ruairidh) which I still love, and which he suits. Now I'm completely stuck for Scottish girls names. DH is adamant that it be a Scottish name.

I'm really struggling to find Scottish girls names that sound pretty and elegant. They all either feel really harsh or quite chavvy. Any ideas?

Fiona? Quite classy and underused.

PourFemme · 21/01/2019 10:10

I’m Irish, not Scottish, but I think Muireann is Scots Gaelic (?) and a beautiful name.

Divgirl2 · 21/01/2019 10:11

@Seline I like Fiona, unfortunately it's DH's exgf's name.

Eilish is lovely.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Scottish_Gaelic_given_names
there are other sites.
If they are anything like Welsh names sites there will be dodgy suggestions.
Double-check any pronunciation.

Floraidh
Niamh
Ailis
Ceitidh
Ciorstaidh
Marsaili (Marsh-a-lee)

SciFiScream · 21/01/2019 14:31

@raviolidreaming Catriona can be pronounced either way though the more "proper" way is Cat ree ona

The way you suggest could be Katrina it's the "o" that makes the difference.

Bittermints · 21/01/2019 14:32

I love Catriona but would have been driven mad by people pronouncing it Cat-ree-oh-na.

Flora is lovely.

Effie or Phemie are very traditional short versions of Euphemia. I can't say I'm all that sold on them but they're very Scottish.

Margaret is a very Scottish name. So is Isobel.

Moira? Iona, Isla, Mairi are all good names.
