We're due our first baby at the end of March and are struggling to chose a name. We don't know the sex so we will need a couple of choices for both.
Neither me nor DH have really found a name that has just clicked and I can't really imagine having a child with any of the names on our shortlist.
Please can I have your honest opinion on our very short shortlist and if you've got any suggestions, they'd be gratefully received!

Girls
Emilia - We both really like how this name sounds and looks written down.
Keira - I really like this name and is the only one I can kind of imagine using. DH thinks it's alright but it wouldn't be his first choice.
Isla - This is DH's favourite. I love how it sounds but not so much how it looks written down. I'm also concerned how common it is.
Megan - It just doesn't click with me for some reason.

Boys
George- The one we're most likely to go with. It's a classic and I don't think you can go wrong with it but is it a bit boring?
James - I can imagine a teenager and adult being named James but not so much a baby/child. Again, is it a bit boring? Never met a bad James though!
Charlie - We both love this name but I'm concerned if it's becoming a bit "chavvy". It's also DH's brothers name. We only see him a few times a year but not sure if it's a bit close.

My names that have been Vetoed.
Olivia- Promiscuous girl at DH's Uni
Heidi- He just gave me the... Hmm face.
Madelyn- Madeline McCann
Harry- There's going to be a lot this year according to DH due to the World Cup.

Love all your girls names except Megan as I feel it will be a name used in the future ( Markle)
And yes to George ( but used a fair bit.)
And yes to James.
No to Charlie.

goldengummybear · 15/01/2019 16:47

Emilia - Will get mistaken for the more popular Amelia quite a lot. Very pretty
Keira - The Keira Knightley spelling is "wrong" so go for the normal spelling.
Isla - pretty but very popular
Megan - you'll get asked if you are a Royal fan. Especially as you also like Harry and George

Boys
George-It's a good name but will lead to questions about your opinion on the Royals imo
James - I like it. Not as popular as George which is good.
Charlie - Would he be Charles on a birth certificate?

Tobykins · 15/01/2019 16:53

Girls either Emilia or Isla. Personally I'd go with Emilia.

Boys - personally I'd go with James. George a good second choice. If Charlie, Charles on birth certificate. Regarding boring, safe names my DS is Thomas. Everyone knows how to say it, spell it and despite its apparent popularity, rarely meet any, he's 2.5yrs. I think it suits him now and certainly will into adulthood.

Other suggestions Henry, Sebastian, Jonathan, Edward, Alexander, Oscar, Oliver, William.
Harriet, Hazel, Isabel, Matilda, Jemima, Emma, Rosanna, Helena.

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 15/01/2019 17:02

Thanks everyone... I have got a bit of a royal theme going on. I hadn't noticed!
Another reason why I'm a bit dubious about using Charlie is because it would be Charlie on the birth certificate and I'm not fond of NNs as legal names. I really don't like Charles as it reminds me of Prince Charles who I personally think is a bit of a buffoon.

@tobykins I really liked Harriet, Edward and Oscar but DH has vetoed them. Apparently Edward doesn't sound like a name when you repeat it over and over again. Oscar is too pretentious apparently, as is Harriet. I've tried being the voice of reason but he won't budge!

I like Keira.

Your boys suggestions are a little dull through overuse.

IMissGin · 15/01/2019 17:19

I like Kiera and Isla of your girls, I like James of the boys choices

None are particularly offensive, my least favourites are Emilia and Charlie

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 15/01/2019 17:22

@tammytoby & @IMissGin... I think this is why none of them click with me, they're just a bit bland but I don't want anything way out there. Kind of contradicting myself, I know!

Emilia - really pretty, classy too.
Keira - not a big fan but it's not terrible.
Isla - a bit naff to me.
Megan - quite nice, might become very popular.

George - Not my favourite, reminds me of the georgie porgie pudding and pie rhyme, but im unusual in this as it is a classic.
James - love it but the risk of Jimmy would make me nervous.
Charlie - one of my favourite boys names.

MikeUniformMike · 15/01/2019 17:27

Girls
Emilia - I like it but there are a lot of Emilys, Amelias and Amelies around.
Keira - I'm not keen.
Isla - It's nice but very popular. Will date.
Megan - Me neither..

Boys
George- classic
James - classic. I'd use Jamie as a nn
Charlie - Charles is a classic name.

My names that have been Vetoed.
Olivia- too popular
Heidi- I like it
Madelyn- Don't like the spelling
Harry- too popular.

MikeUniformMike · 15/01/2019 17:29

I think I'd go with Isla and Charlie.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/01/2019 17:32

I like all your boys names but have the same Charlie/Charles issue you have. What about Matthew, Isaac or Robert.

NicoleNoPants · 15/01/2019 17:32

Will DH’s brother think the baby is named after him?

Shadow1234 · 15/01/2019 17:32

Kiera would be my first choice
Isla second choice

comebacksoonsusan · 15/01/2019 17:37

I'm not wild about any of them but:

Kiera
James

Choosinganame · 15/01/2019 19:02

I love Keira/Kiera either spelling is lovely but Keira is the most popular now in the UK. It is just such a pretty sound.
Isla and Emilia are a definite no from me.
Isla is so overused especially with all the Lyra, Lila and Lola's as well.
Same goes for Emilia as it sounds just like Amelia.
Megan is nice but doesn't do anything for me.

I think all your boys choices are very safe/slightly dull but I would choose George probably followed by James.
Charlie being a nn would put me off a bit but it is in no way chavvy, still a nice name.

MsTSwift · 15/01/2019 19:05

Sorry all abit over used for my taste. They are all fine but not special enough for a new baby

emilybrontescorsett · 15/01/2019 19:07

From your list, I would pick Emilia and James. I vetoed James because I dislike the Nick names. Charlie is too Nick namey for me and George just conjures up images of a fat bespectacled boy, sorry.

Doris19 · 15/01/2019 20:31

Of your list, my favourite is Isla but it is now quite popular. What about Thea?

For a boy, any of your shortlist are good solid names but I have the same issues with Charles. I would probably therefore choose George. What about William or Luke?

AssumeItWasSomethingClever · 16/01/2019 09:32

@Doris19 William was on my list but DH has an uncle that he's not particular fond of with that name so he's vetoed it. I like Luke! I shall put it to him. Thank you 😊

The only one I dislike out of all of them is Keira - all the others are great names. Emilia and James are my favourites.

I wouldn't put Charlie on a birth certificate personally, I'd use Charles.

Other suggestions, Thomas, Ben(jamin), Alex(ander), Hannah, Catherine...

TatianaLarina · 16/01/2019 12:07

Like George and James. Don’t like any of the girls names - all a bit dull and overused.

TigerQuoll · 16/01/2019 12:14

What about Keira spelled Ciara?

Not Emilia as she would always have to spell it for people e.g. "Emilia-with-an-E" and then you'd get silly people writing Amelie or something and it would get really annoying.

TigerQuoll · 16/01/2019 12:15

Also what about Ciaran/Keiran for a boy? Since you like Keira/Ciara

Astronica · 16/01/2019 13:15

My favourites are Keira and George. I also like Megan, and both James and Charlie.

libellule1 · 16/01/2019 13:34

I would go with James and Isla from your list. I also like Emilia.
There must be other names you like, how about Elise?
