Flora?

TTC child 2 so no impending urgency. Always had Flora down for if we have a girl (1 DS so far) and I'm pretty set on it because it's for personal reasons not just a name I 'like.' DH has always been on board with this until yesterday he care home saying in laws were taking the piss of a neighbour called Flora calling her Flora spreadable. Now he's not keen. We may not even have a girl but I just wondered if anyone else thought of the butter when they heard the name? TIA

I love the name, I know a couple and they have never been called ‘spreadable’ or anything like it. Tbh I think if kids want to make fun of someone, they’ll find a way no matter what their name is! So go with the name you love.

Really love Flora.

UrsulaPandress · 13/01/2019 15:24

Beautiful name. Roman Goddess of flowers and Spring.

EatShitBoswell · 13/01/2019 15:46

I think it's very pretty! It doesn't make me think of margarine at all. It makes me think of Disney's sleeping beauty and the roman goddess!

bumpysleighridejack · 13/01/2019 16:56

Thank you for re-assuring me! And for other pretty Scottish names, although Flora is still my favourite! Yes I think it's a link that's already starting to date so will disappear all together soon. Just need to convince DH if the time comes!

I don’t think of the margarine but first thing that comes to mind when I hear Flora is yeast or bacterial cultures.

It’s a nice name but could never use it for that reason! I’d go with Florence or Freya instead perhaps.

BeakyFlapdoodle · 13/01/2019 19:59

I have a Flora 🙂
She was named after a friend and I never, ever thought of the margarine thing until coming on here 😂 even so, it doesn’t bother me. Pretty sure my girl will be ballsy enough to take on anyone who comes at her with a sexist, dated taunt about her name. And, like others have said, it doesn’t seem to bother parents of Felix, Sky, Zara etc..?

CanadianJohn · 13/01/2019 20:03

I didn't think of margarine.

Flora is nice, and if you had twins you could call them Flora and Fauna.

dementedma · 13/01/2019 20:07

know quite a few young Flora's here in Scotland and it's perfectly acceptable. I think the margerine thing is too long ago to matter. I certainly don't make that connection. It's a lovely name, especially with a Scottish surname

Phebes · 13/01/2019 20:15

It’s beautiful! I like that it’s traditionally Scottish but travels really well.

ellenpartridge · 13/01/2019 20:34

It's lovely

Antigonads · 13/01/2019 20:49

Since when was Flora Scottish?

She was a Roman goddess.

bumpysleighridejack · 13/01/2019 21:01

Yes but it's a traditionally Scottish name going back hundreds of years. I think it would be easier if we lived in Scotland as it's obviously a much more common name but unfortunately we are in England for now so need to make it work. Our DS has a very old Gaelic Irish/Scottish name which does confuse the English of my age and up, but for his friends it's not a problem because there's such greater diversity. That's what I'm hoping for.

It was my very first thought. I'm sorry but I wouldn't want my daughter to be spreadable. What about Florence?

iAMequal · 14/01/2019 11:25

I know a Flora who's around 50 and it really suits her. I love it. I wanted Flora for my Dd but a different name won out.

ZebraKid71 · 14/01/2019 15:12

It will only be the older generation that make that association. My school aged nieces and nephews would literally have no idea!

It's lovely, so much nicer than Florence, which is my opinion is waaaaay to popular at the moment.

itsharderthanithought89 · 14/01/2019 15:19

Gorgeous name and on my list too

SuzieBishop · 15/01/2019 13:01

Flora is the most amazing name!! I'm currently pregnant with a little girl and its my dream name but my husband hates it and I'm so so sad I won't get to use it. I'm hopefully going to use it as a middle name if it goes with the first name we go for.

MaiaRindell · 15/01/2019 16:17

I think Flora is beautiful. It makes me think of Flora McDonald or the Latin Flora and Fauna and not the spread. I'm in Scotland.

MsTSwift · 15/01/2019 19:12

Lovely name. Every name has done daft link to something if you look hard enough I really like Flora and not too well used

RoseAndRose · 20/01/2019 13:19

It's no well used because 'spreads easily' is more than just daft.

It's been 20 or so years since the ads. But the insult remains.

kalefire · 20/01/2019 13:29

I'm similar OP. I love Flora and also Lenor! Can't get away from the associations with household items though pfft. They just sound so lovely

Uhohmummy · 20/01/2019 16:17

I love Flora but didn’t use it because of the margarine connotation. DH wouldn’t agree to use it for this reason. I mentioned the name to a few people thinking they’d agree with me in thinking that no one would make the link these days, but surprisingly most people do. We’re not old by the way.

MollyHuaCha · 20/01/2019 16:29

I like it.

PeroniZuchini · 20/01/2019 16:35

Love love love the name. Would have picked it but unfortunately it was the name of my parents’ dog.
