What’s your thoughts on this name?
Trendy...classic?
Normal English name...or very European sounding?
Is it posh?

Thanks

This thread makes me happy >

It's a gorgeous name op, go for it. We haven't regretted it for a moment.

Freyanna · 11/01/2019 00:08

Lara is a lovely name, I've always liked it since watching 'Dr Zhivago'.

Milasmummy · 11/01/2019 01:20

Thanks for your replies! I’m so shocked at such a positive feedback. I really expected a different response such as
“It’s a very standard name”
“ sara/tara/Lara been there done that”
“Very 80s”

The dh is more keen on this name but me not so much. But perhaps this is changing my mind.

I usually prefer frillier elegant sounding names.
Thanks for the feedback!

It is elegant! But not frilly.

I don't remember it being popular in the 80s at all. That would have been Laura or Lorna, more likely.

KirstyT11 · 11/01/2019 13:37

Love Lara. It's on my long list of girls names. X

widgetbeana · 12/01/2019 18:45

We really liked Lara, but it was too close to his sisters name (Laura). So we went with Cara instead. Easy to say, spell and still pretty. Go for Lara.

SoftBlocks · 12/01/2019 18:48

Lovely name, much prefer it to Lily.

NutRoastNancy · 12/01/2019 18:59

I think Lara is a beautiful name.

AlliKaneErikson · 13/01/2019 00:44

widgetbeana my DH’s sister is also called Laura but we went with Lara anyway- people do occasionally call them by the wrong name!

MummaGiles · 13/01/2019 10:12

Love it!

Grimbles · 13/01/2019 14:41

I love the short 'L' names like Lyra, Lara, Lena, Leda. Currently I also like Lyde (pronounced lie-dee) if you wanted something a bit more unique?

Cazastrophe · 13/01/2019 15:17

How about Lorelei? (Pronounced Laurel eye). Lori for short. Love this name!

Milasmummy · 13/01/2019 20:26

Thank you so much for the responses.
It’s quite surprising but I posted this question comparing Lara to lily/Lilia on a different website (netmums to be exact!) and the results were quite different! They were very pro lily/Lilia compared to Lara. I wonder why that is!? Has left me quite confused!

If either of our DCs had been a girl, Lara was the name we had decided to use. This was 30 years ago. I've loved it ever since I first saw Dr Zhivago. I still love it and it would still be top of my list of girls names.

NataliaOsipova · 13/01/2019 20:37

Lara is very nice; slightly unusual but classic. Hate Lily - don’t know why, but I really don’t like it.

Spongeb0b · 13/01/2019 20:38

Love it! Fave novel is Dr Zhivago. Main character gets called Lara but her full name is Larissa which I also love!

SemperIdem · 13/01/2019 21:02

op

The demographics of the two websites are quite different.

Milasmummy · 13/01/2019 21:52

@semperldem oh really, how so?

OP posts:
Pemba · 14/01/2019 15:56

Well posters on Netmums seem on average to be younger and less educated than posters on here. There is a lower standard of grammar and spelling, posts are shorter etc. They call each other 'ladies' and 'hun' a lot. That's the impression you get reading both websites (which I do).

So you tend to find both American names (like Cody, Taylor etc.) and cutesy names like Millie, Lily (actually that one's not that cutesy) and Teddy and especially hyphenated names like Ava-Mae are more popular on there.

I hope this is not contentious to say.

SemperIdem · 14/01/2019 17:07

Pemba that is exactly what I meant.

Milasmummy · 14/01/2019 18:09

@pemba thanks for clarifying!
I see what you mean.
But I guess that might mean that the name Lara is used within a different demographic than lily/Lilia.

pemba sorry just figured out how to tag you properly!

Lily is pretty and cute.
Lilia sounds pretty
Lara is not as cutesy but nice

Inquisitivesoul · 22/03/2019 15:42

Hi,
Both these names are on my shortlist.
Which did you decide in the end?

Thanks

aliceandkids77 · 23/03/2019 16:18

I love Lara, much classier than Lily imo.
