Ciara/Kiara pronounced “Kee-are-ruh”???

Hi everyone,

I’m after your opinions as it’s only 3 weeks until my due date and as we haven’t settled on a name yet, I’m starting to panic!

The initial name I liked was Keira Rose (as in Knightley). But my other half isn’t keen on it as he doesn’t like somebody with that name.

He showed me a name on his phone which he said he liked “Ciara”, which we both automatically pronounced “Kee-are-ruh”.

I‘ve since learnt Ciara is ironically the original Irish form of Keira, but can also be pronounced “Sea-air-ruh”, due to the singer.

Almost all of our close family have screwed their noses up at Ciara/Kiara “Kee-are-ruh“, which has put me off it a bit, but my other half is set on it and already calls her KiKi.

Our other daughters are:

Amelia Daisy and Caitlin Poppy.

Ps I’m open minded to other suggestions.

So what do you think of:

Ciara Rose

Kiara Rose? Xxxxxx

If you want “kee-are-uh” use Chiara,an Italian name and actually pronounced that way.

Ciara is Kee-rah, Keira is just the anglicised spelling of it.

Just because an American pronounced it See-air-ah doesn’t make it an accepted variation.

WhirlieGigg · 09/01/2019 10:18

If I saw Kiara written down I’d pronounce it as Kee-rah. Depends if that’s what you want?

Allthebubbles · 09/01/2019 10:19

I think it's pretty and goes with your other names. Maybe use the Italian spelling but I would have pronounced it like you do. Also I love Kiki as a nickname.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/01/2019 10:20

Kiki is nice, why not go with that?

finn1020 · 09/01/2019 10:21

Ciara is keer-rah
Chiara is key-ah-rah.

FayFortune · 09/01/2019 10:26

Ciara / Kiera I know as pronounced " Kee-ra". Sorry.

I'm always assume Keira Knightley' name is some alternative spelling as I've literally known no other Kiera spell it that way!

(Katherine could be KiKi too. Or Kirsten or Christina.)

ScrumptiousBears · 09/01/2019 10:35

Are you happy with having to constantly tell people how you want it pronounced and will you get narky when people always get it wrong?

BlackPrism · 09/01/2019 10:36

Lion King 2

BlackPrism · 09/01/2019 10:37

I would have pronounced it as ki-ah-ruh immediately because of the above film.

FayFortune · 09/01/2019 10:43

The Italian name Chiara is more where you are heading I think, as SemperIdem has said.

And no, I've never known any Irish or Scots Kiaras/ Ciaras pronounce it Sea-air-uh!

Astronica · 09/01/2019 10:52

Just to echo pps:
Chiara is Italian and pronounced kee-ah- rah.
Ciara and Kiera are pronounced Kee-rah.

Either would be really lovely and work with the sisters. Just don't do Ciara pronounced as kee-ah-rah!

Other names for which Kiki could be a nickname: Katherine/Catherine, Keziah, Kerensa, Michaela.

Til89 · 09/01/2019 12:01

I’d pronounce it Kee-rah.

daisypond · 09/01/2019 12:24

Chiara (Italian) is key-ah-ruh. It's a lovely name.
But Ciara can't be key-ah-ruh or see-air-ruh. It's Keira (as in Keira Knightley)
If you want see-air-ruh, use Sierra.

ReginaPhalange89 · 09/01/2019 13:16

My 6 year old has a friend called Kiara, pronounced kee-ah-ra . So it sounds normal to me , that's how I'd sound it if I had to guess .

ZebraKid71 · 09/01/2019 19:41

Kiara if pronounce kee-ar-ah, due to the lion King!

Ciara if pronounce Kee-rah.

Spell it chiara if you want the first pronunciation.

Beeziekn33ze · 09/01/2019 20:02

Love Chiara Rose.

DramaAlpaca · 09/01/2019 20:07

Pronouncing Ciara as 'kee-ah-ra' or 'see-ah-ra' just looks ignorant to me. Sorry.

If you want that spelling use Chiara.

Veterinari · 09/01/2019 20:09

If you want it pronounced see-air-uh call her Sierra - like the car/mountain range

Bringbackthestripes · 09/01/2019 20:10

DC had a Kiara in class. She was Kee-are-a.

TheCraicDealer · 09/01/2019 20:42

If you want it pronounced see-air-uh call her Sierra

This, you'll save you and your DD a life of correcting the pronunciation of what's a pretty common name. I remember hearing about that singer on the radio when her first single came out and was baffled when I saw her name written down. How do you get that name from those letters? Surely it would be Ciaira, not Ciara?

ThatsNotNiceRoger · 09/01/2019 20:46

Ciara is Kee rah, like everyone else has said.

RedDwarves · 09/01/2019 20:55

Kiara and Ciara are different names, not just different spellings.

The "original" spelling of Kiara is Chiara - key-ah-rah.

Ciara/Kiera/Keira are "keer-uh".

LoopyLoonyLuna · 09/01/2019 21:02

I know a Kiara pronounce Kee-ah-ruh and if I saw it written down I’d pronounce it that way but some people might get it wrong. I think it’s nice.
If you both like Kiki just call her that it is a name in its own right.

DumbledoresApprentice · 09/01/2019 21:06

I would immediately pronounce Ciara keer-ah. I teach in a Girls secondary school (Catholic, so lots of kids with Irish backgrounds) and have taught a lot of Ciaras.
I’ve taught one (utterly lovely) kid called Kiara which is pronounced Kee-ah-ruh. I think that’s a lovely name if it’s the pronunciation you want. I think if you go for Ciara people will assume it’s keer-ah. I would.

Theunreasonableone · 09/01/2019 21:10

Ciara is pronounced Keer-uh as its Gaelic. The ‘C’ is a hard K sound. Like Cillian is pronounced Kill-e-an
