Lila and Lily?!

Expecting our 3rd girl, and our oldest girl who is 3 is absolutely adamant we need to call this baby Lily. The problem is, she is called Lila...we can't have a Lila and a Lily can we?! (Middle daughter has an unrelated name starting with a different letter)

Way too similar. I wouldn't be letting my 3 year decide either. She will have forgotten next week. Congrats to you :)

llittlebee · 27/12/2018 10:12

No you can't. Use Lily as a middle name.

Tailrunner · 27/12/2018 10:16

I wouldn't as they are far too similar but I would use Lily as a middle name. We chose 3 or 4 names we liked then let DD1 choose DD2's name from those as we were happy with any of them.

nocluenoidea · 27/12/2018 10:17

I should probably add that Lila is pronounced 'lie-la' (not lee-la), so slightly different sound to Lily. But the answers above probably still apply I would imagine!

did she say why she wanted Lily or is it just because it’s close to her name?

NewIdeasToday · 27/12/2018 10:18

This would be daft.

nocluenoidea · 27/12/2018 10:19

She's just been calling the baby Lily for the past few months (for no apparent reason!) 😂. When we tell her Lily is too similar to Lila she won't have it and gets very annoyed!

It's completely insane to hand over responsibility for choosing your child's name to your 3 yo.

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/12/2018 10:25

They’re far too similar, and your 3 year old doesn’t get to name the baby. Let her get annoyed.

nocluenoidea · 27/12/2018 10:27

We are absolutely not handing over responsibility at all, and quite willing to upset her- inevitably she'll forget about it soon enough.
We do however like the name Lily too, but I suspected it was far too similar to Lila, and comments here have confirmed that!

Too similar, it will be very confusing. Also you don't want the little one to think she has an unoriginal name.

Cookit · 27/12/2018 10:49

Yeah you can’t do that.
Are there any names that Lily could be a nickname for that you could use?

antipodeanjo · 27/12/2018 11:29

They're both pretty names, but I agree with PP that they are too similar.

It's funny how toddlers get set on a name... my DS 2 was very firm that DD should be called "Timmy brown", our surname is not Brown. 🤷🏻‍♀️
He mentioned it several times a day in my pregnancy. When she was born we told him her name (surprisingly not Timmy Brown), he accepted it and we haven't heard any more of Timmy brown since then...

Sophronia · 27/12/2018 11:33

Use it as a middle name.

3 year olds don't get to decide.

Having a Lila and a Lily in the same family is ridiculous OP. You know that - otherwise you wouldn't be asking.

BiggFactHunt · 27/12/2018 11:47

I asked my 4 and 2 yr olds what our new baby should be called.
Lola they said. Hmm quite nice I thought. ‘What if it’s a boy?’ I asked them. Charlie was the reply.
That’s when I realised they were just picking names from CBeebies.

T’was soon forgotten when the baby was born and named and they never mentioned Charlie or Lola again.

Anyway, our little Tinky-Winky is doing great and my advice is to choose your own name and not ask the children.

Lila, Lola and Lily would make a fine set of sisters.
Little Lila should not be getting a say.

nocluenoidea · 27/12/2018 20:33

Well that answers that then! Thanks all

I know twins called Lily and Lila. Can’t get my head around it personally.

WanderingTrolley1 · 27/12/2018 22:54

It’d sound daft, IMO.

mathanxiety · 27/12/2018 23:10

Grin BiggFactHunt
I would have had children named Whoopi, Harlem, PomPom and Samantha if I had listened to DD1.

BiggFactHunt · 28/12/2018 07:46

Interesting mix mathanxiety
Love the normality of Samantha against the others Grin

Danteinferno · 28/12/2018 07:48

I know twins called that

chumbal · 28/12/2018 07:49

I think they are too similar Sad
