Anyone else struggling with girls names?

I'm due in March 2019 and we don't know what we're having - we chose to keep it a surprise

We're finding it easy to come up with boys names but we can't find any girls names that we like

We've been through so many different websites trying to find some but there just aren't any where we think 'thats the one' and I don't really want to settle for one because 'it'll do' if you know what I mean, I really want to love the name

We don't really like the overly popular names, we're looking for something a little bit different/not so common but that isn't too out there. Just a nice name that isn't overused

I had this struggle too. It's finding a balance between "sorry, WHAT is their name?" and "oh yes, I know 7 little girls with that name."

We ended up with Claudia, which we love. Everyone had heard of it; nobody knew one.

I had the same problem. Boys names were easy!
I wanted a name I loved. We settled on a name which I love now more than I did and it suits her so well. I believe a baby does grow into their name.

MamaDane · 14/12/2018 23:06

Oh we did. My (British) DP loves names like Naomi, Alexa, Hayley and Chloe. And I (Danish) love names like Liva, Solveig, Lilja, Nova, Alba, Vilja, and Vilde.

But we found a name we both love thankfully (Emilia) and after stumbled upon a second name, but it's too special I don't want to put it here in case we use it and it can "out" us.

My criteria is something fairly unusual that can be shortened to a more common nickname to give baby options later in life or if they want to blend in more.

Dd1 is Anneka nn Annie.
Currently pregnant and we're liking Elspeth at the moment but change our minds so often! It's so hard isn't it!

Redskyandrainbows67 · 15/12/2018 00:08

Sometimes you have to wait until you see the baby
This can be the challenge of not finding out the sex - you mentally can’t place the baby or start to imagine it.

@ZebraKid71 the names Harriet - Hattie, Harrie and Eliza - Liz, Lizzie, Elle, Ellie

Just came straight to my mind when you were describing a well known under used name.

Calzone · 15/12/2018 09:15

Merdia??? 🤪🤪
I really would not like to be called Merdia.

Eliza is fabulous and my friend just used it for her daughter at my suggestion.💕💕💕

Calzone · 15/12/2018 09:16

Oriele is beautiful.

Lynne45 · 15/12/2018 09:51

I would have struggled with girls names! Some I like are:
Violet, Cora, Anna, Frances, Marie, Daisy, Ava, Rita, Elizabeth/Betty. I don't like many of the 80s names personally (Jessica, Jennifer, Stephanie, Heather...).

MamaDane · 15/12/2018 09:58

@Calzone Oriele could lead to an unfortunate nickname.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 15/12/2018 13:09

Just go with Olivia, everyone’s called it but it’s a mumsnet fave Hmm

My fave girls names are Nora, Cora, Primrose right now

HeyMicky · 15/12/2018 13:15

I can't find it right now, but about two years ago someone posted a huge list of girls' names that were in the top 1000, easily recognised and not too hard to spell. It was really useful and some lovely and surprising ideas on there

coffeekittens · 15/12/2018 13:23

I struggled with girls names until I had a private gender scan and pretty much decided on a name.

Names that I liked before for a girl were: Melissa, Eleanor (nn Nellie), Nora, Nancy, Pearl, Violet, Clara, Darcey, Frankie, Indie.

There was an amazing woman named Dovey Roundtree who died about a year ago at the age of 104. After learning about her, I just love her name. It would normally not be a name I'd care for, but that changed when I read about her life story.

Thetigerwhocameto · 17/12/2018 01:16

We really struggled, team yellow but, I had a boys name all picked out. Obviously DC was a girl.

We went with Niamh, if I were to have another DD I would choose Orla, although DH would likely disagree 😂
