We can't name our daughter Rachel, can we?

I have loved the name Rachel since I was a little girl. My husband also loves the name. It's a nice classic name that isn't too popular at the moment.

However, our surname is Chandler. We can't call her Rachel Chandler, can we?

I don't see why not. Her friends wont know anything at all about Friends. So she won't get teased, you might get some comments at first. Then again you might not! I wouldn't say anything negative about a babies name. I can't imagine many people would. I would avoid Monica for a second name.

TBDO · 11/12/2018 22:54

I wouldn’t. My DC is teen and they are all getting into friends... these are the people your DD will be working with in 20 years.

Grin

I don't think so

AtrociousCircumstance · 11/12/2018 22:57

Could it BE any more likely to remind people of Friends?! Grin

(Actually I think it’s not a problem)

Liverpool1944 · 11/12/2018 22:58

Unless you change your last name 😊

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 11/12/2018 22:58

I know someone with 2 girls called Phoebe & Rachel 🤷🏻‍♀️

User10fuckingmillion · 11/12/2018 22:58

No. Grin don’t!

HeronLanyon · 11/12/2018 22:58

I think the names are hard to say together. The chelcha bit feels clunky in my mouth. That could of course just be me ! Actually just said it and it seemed less so.

IdaBWells · 11/12/2018 23:01

Well my teens aged 15 and 18 absolutely love Friends so they would think it was fantastic! I would, it’s a classic name, by the time she is an adult Friends will be 40+ years old!

EugenesAxe · 11/12/2018 23:02

Well you can, just be prepared for the inevitable “Fans of Friends are you?” questions 😁

What about using her Biblical counterpart, and going for Leah Chandler. I actually quite like it as a combo, although Leah’s not what I would call very classic.

IdblowJonSnow · 11/12/2018 23:03

I think you can. I didn't immediately make the connection. Not a particular friends fan! She'll be of a totally other generation who just won't get it. I like the name Rachel. Or u CD have it as a middle name of course.

I didn’t make the connection - and I’m the right sort of age. It’ll mean nothing to kids of that age. Go for it.

HeronLanyon · 11/12/2018 23:08

natalia now tempted to change user name to TamaraRojo. Still mourn her at roh and have never got on with NO. Although saw her in recent triple bill and kind of got it.

waterlego6064 · 11/12/2018 23:08

I once met someone my own age with this exact name! She was born some time before Friends existed, but was in her teens when the show started airing! I don’t recall much teasing or mention of it, but I didn’t know her very well so could be wrong.

But I think if you love it, use it. I think some people might see the connection but are unlikely to think you actually drew your naming inspiration from the show!

TiggyWiggyLetsGo · 11/12/2018 23:24

Thank you all. I adore Phoebe (the name) too but Rachel is our #1 name.

One of her big brothers has Joseph as a middle name :/

Rachel Chandler! Grin
Sorry OP but no, it's a bit ridiculous.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 11/12/2018 23:50

I wouldn’t if I were you. I’m from after the friends generation and I promise you all of my friends would still make the connection.

Middle name yes, but I’d steer clear otherwise. Sorry! That’s not what you wanted to hear but best to be honest now

spudlet7 · 11/12/2018 23:53

I think it's fine! Her generation won't connect the two names and anyone who does is unlikely to find any negative connotations there as it's such a well-loved show.

Picknickers · 12/12/2018 00:01

Leah Chandler reminds me if chandelier. Sorry, not helping.

Destinysdaughter · 12/12/2018 00:05

I think it's a great name! ( but I may be a bit biased...) 😀

TheFairyAstronaut · 12/12/2018 00:10

It won’t be a thing for her generation. And for older people, it’s likely to raise a smile of recognition, so it could be an auspicious name.

Just don’t change your surname to Chanandeler-Bong.

Shortyboo · 12/12/2018 00:12

Hell no Grin

HeronLanyon · 12/12/2018 00:14

Perhaps by the time she is old enough for it to matter Friends will BE ON A BREAK.

Bouncingbelle · 12/12/2018 00:15

Sounds fine to me! I wouldnt automatically make the connection and i love the name rachel.....tho my sisters are rachel & monica so maybe im just used to friends references!)
