Torn with these two names

My DH and I are expecting DD in about 4 weeks and I’m torn between the two names, he likes both so is no help 😫😫
Adelaide Grace or Ellis James
I know Ellis is traditionally a boys name but I knew a girl called Ellis and she was just the most beautiful person and James is after my brother I didn’t like Jamie and I’m not concerned about it being feminine.
But I genuinely love Adelaide Grace as it’s not very common but I worry about it being too out there to be considered sensible!
TIA

Adelaide Grace

You really are setting your dd up for a lifetime of other people’s confusion and her misery if you give her TWO boys names!

I really hate the MN trend of giving girls boys names. If you like it so much then change your own name, don’t inflict it on your daughter!

AuntieStella · 11/12/2018 07:29

Adelaide Grace

(I don't like boys names on girls)

christmaspuddingyumyumyum · 11/12/2018 07:33

With the names you've chosen it looks like you've a name for a girl and one for a boy! Personally I would use AG rather than EJ.

TheVortex · 11/12/2018 07:48

Don't give a daughter traditionally male names. Think long about it.

I have unisex name that was only really known in the male version when I was small. I hated it million times over. People assuming I was boy before meeting me. Admittedly not helped by trend for short hair cuts at the time.
48 years later it still gets on my wick....

festivedogbone · 11/12/2018 08:27

Adelaide. Or Alice - sounds quite like Ellis to me but that could be my accent!

ernjas · 11/12/2018 08:29

Ellis is fine but not with James.

Astronica · 11/12/2018 08:44

Adelaide Grace is gorgeous and not 'out there' at all. I don't mind Ellis for a girl but I think she would need a clearly girl's middle name as Ellis James will always be assumed to be a boy. Adelaide James works, or Ellis Jacqueline / Jacquie / Jacquetta /Jacomina. Or Ellis Grace.

raviolidreaming · 11/12/2018 09:14

I genuinely love Adelaide Grace ... but I worry about it being too out there to be considered sensible!

I agree with other other posters that it's giving two male names that is the less sensible choice.

nocluenoidea · 11/12/2018 09:40

Adelaide James, if you use Ellis then I really don't think you can use James. I goes okay but it reads as a boys name 100%

sayitisntsojo · 11/12/2018 10:29

@freakinbananaspiders I am familiar with and love Elis James so I think this would be a great name!

Fashionista101 · 11/12/2018 10:31

I think people are crazy asking for opinions on names, it's so personal. Only you and your partner can decide, the more people you ask the more confusing it will be GrinI like both.

pumpkinpie01 · 11/12/2018 10:42

Elise is lovely , a little bit different but not massively so, I really dont think you can give a girl 2 boys names, I dont think she will thank you when she is older. How about Elise James? That sounds strong but feminine.

BertrandRussell · 11/12/2018 10:46

If you were expecting a boy would you call him Adelaide Grace?

Don't call a girl Ellis James then.

trulybadlydeeply · 11/12/2018 10:51

Adelaide Grace is beautiful. Whilst there's nothing at all wrong with Ellis James, and as an adult few people would know her middle name anyhow, I would worry that on all the umpteen forms you have to fill in for children (school, health, clubs etc) that they may well see the name and assume that you have ticked the "F" box by mistake. Of course they will soon realise, but do you want to keep explaining?

Actually, Ellis Adelaide is very nice too.

Cosmoa · 11/12/2018 11:05

I love Ellis James! My sister is called Ellis and I love it on a girl ā¤ļø

Pinklily1 · 11/12/2018 11:11

I like both names but my assumption reading the name Ellis James would be that the child was a boy. I’d go with Adelaide Grace for that reason.

ladybee28 · 11/12/2018 11:12

Adelaide Grace - it's got a lovely, storybook, Little House On The Prairie feel to it.

I like the rhythm of the shortened "Adie Grace", too.

Does remind me a little of the Atwood novel "Alias Grace", which is pretty dark and murdery, but I think that's kinda cool, too Grin

Buddyelf · 11/12/2018 11:19

Oh I actually really like Ellis James for a girl and I'm normally a bit boring with names. My name is pretty boring and I wasn't very adventurous with my own DD's names but this I like.

Marcipex · 11/12/2018 11:23

Ellis is okay, and she'll almost definitely be called Ellie once she's at school.
James is stupid for a girl. Just don't.

trinitybleu · 11/12/2018 11:25

Adelaide Ellis James sounds lovely to me

hoki · 11/12/2018 11:25

Of you call her adelaide (like the city in Australia?) she'll be called Addy. Or maybe if you combine Adelaide James she could be called AJ which to me is definitely a boys name but if she's really cool she could pull it off. I know a little girl called Ellis and while I like it she gets called Alice all the time.

stellarfox · 11/12/2018 11:33

Definitely Adelaide. I do think Ellis is more masculine, but if you have another baby girl or boy you could consider Ellis for either, whereas if you don’t have another girl and used Ellis you might not get to use Adelaide at all!

ZebraKid71 · 11/12/2018 11:46

Adelaide James gets my vote.

I love Adelaide but Grace is a bit meh.

Bigonesmallone3 · 11/12/2018 11:52

Ellis does work as a girls name but paired with James is just a boys name..

I much prefer the other name

SuzieBishop · 11/12/2018 12:44

Ellis James!!! It's absolutely gorgeous! It's definitley not a boys name in as much as Colin is - you can 100% get away with it for a girl.
