Olivia and Olive?

Rosey94 · 04/12/2018 18:41

So my name is Olivia Rose.
Im having a girl and I love the name Olive.
She will be having my middle name.
Would it be weird for us to call her Olive Rose which is so close to my name?

People call me Liv for short so Im worried Olive could get shortened to Liv too?

Opinions please? Im so stuck for other names!

I think its too similar op

Flamingosnbears · 05/12/2018 14:30

Go for it Olive is great imo

Ohyesiam · 05/12/2018 14:35

My partner is Scottish and in his family this sort of thing is often done. So with one of of his cousins the mum and dad are Sarah and Jimmy, and the kids are Jamie and Sara.
So you could pretend to be Scottish....?
But the worst that’s going to happen is homeone might think” that’s an odd choice” , which you can probably love with!

cheesydoesit · 05/12/2018 18:32

I think Olive is a lovely name. I think you should stick with it.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 07/12/2018 01:40

People name kids after dads all the time so why not. Olive is a beautiful name. I know someone who has 2 daughters name after herself & a variation of her partners name

HappyGoLuckyGo · 07/12/2018 02:24

It works because the emphases are different: Olivia vs Olive. I would have thought there are many other beautiful and less confusing/similar options, but if you really love it , OP, go for it!

HappyGoLuckyGo · 07/12/2018 02:25

Sorry, that’s come out weirdly:
O li via
O live

Polkasq · 07/12/2018 09:13

Much too similar IMO. They're both the same name but just slightly varied. It would be like a Sarah choosing Sara, or a Joanna choosing Joanne.

miccam · 07/12/2018 09:25

I say go for it, for generations children have been named after their own parents and other family members. My uncle had his fathers name, 2nd uncle had same fathers middle name with his middle name being his mothers maiden name!! On the female side it's as if they only had 4 names available. Smile

Pinklily1 · 07/12/2018 11:55

Olive is a lovely name, I’d use it, but I’d probably go with a different middle name to my own (sorry if I’ve missed a particular reason why you want to use that middle name).

Sessy19 · 07/12/2018 12:02

Olivia and Olive are very different styles, but admittedly they sound pretty similar.

It is considered to be perfectly acceptable to name a child after her/his father, but less acceptable to name a child after her/his mother...why is this? Why is it societally ok to introduce ‘baby Paul, yes, like his dad...’ but kind of cringe to introduce ‘baby Louise, yes, after me...!’ I’m so offended and embarrassed by this double standard.

If you love the name, use it. It’s a nice name, and becoming increasingly popular, so must have a following! Own it’s likeness to your name though. Be bold about it, not apologetic.

Rosey94 · 07/12/2018 12:31

Thanks for everyones replies. We have decided to chose a different name and think we have got one finally!
Probably going to be a lot of opinions about it because its very different but I just love what we have now chosen

You can't have a daughter called Olive Rose, while you are called Olivia Rose. You might as well call her Olivia Rose Junior! I know they're two different names, but it will come across as lack of imagination and self-obsessed (not saying you are! that's just the vibe it'll give).
I say Olive for a middle name then keep searching for a first name
(By the way I also dislike boys being named after their dads and find it boring too, not just girls and women even if it is less common)

Of course this is all just opinion, but it's not a great idea personally.

starkid · 07/12/2018 13:25

Sorry x-post OP, good idea and glad you found another name you love :)

Bloomburger · 07/12/2018 13:29

teachertraining · 07/12/2018 13:31

My niece is called Olivia and we all call her olive, think it’s a bit too similar.

teachertraining · 07/12/2018 13:32

Sorry didn’t see your update, what name did you go for?

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 07/12/2018 14:53

What name have you chosen?

Joinourclub · 07/12/2018 14:55
