There is an article running today in the Daily Fail about a girl named Abcde - apparently it’s pronounced ‘ab-city’. Having worked with hundreds of children in my career, it’s not often I come across a name that is completely unique to me. So Mumsnetters, do any of you know an Abcde?

This name is so ridiculous I actually felt angry at the parents. Poor kid.

Abside is not too bad...especially compared to Abcde!

I don’t mind the sound of ‘absedee’ which really is just like ‘rhapsody’ without the rh.
But spelling it abcde is hilarious. Employee should have internalized the hysteria though. Would have been entirely within rights to check it matched passport or gov ID though, because it DOES look like a placeholder until the actual name is provided.
My airline staff would have been all over it in the crew room, but would hopefully have kept it together on the customer side.

I think LaLa sounds sophisticated compared to Abcde.

No never heard of it, imo it’s silly & nobody will know how to pronounce it exactly.

If you give your child a stupid name you have to expect people to laugh! If I saw this I'd assume it was a mistake and laugh. The mother is crazy even her pronunciation doesn't make sense.

Registrars should be able to ban parents from giving their kids dickish names

At least naming DC2 should be very easy! I wonder how they will pronounce FGHIJ.

It's a little stupid for the mother to name her child Abcde, just as 381 others in the USA have done, without first consulting the wise here on MumsNet.
