Are these dumb names?

I’m having a baby soon, and I want to call it something nice. I don’t know what though, as my best friend laughed at the suggestions.

Amie
Addison
Sierra
Serena
Jocasta
Matilda

What about Sienna instead of Sierra?

Serena and Matilda are both great names!

I wouldn’t use the Amie spelling, I would use Amy but I think this is quite a dated name

Sidandbump · 25/11/2018 13:52

Nothing wrong with the spelling of Amie. I grew up with one and she never had problems with spelling or pronunciation. She deffinately didn't get Arnie!

Ask yourself will your friend be there for you throughout your daughters life? Will she watch your daughter grow up and be proud of her? If not why give her any say in your daughters name? Pick something you like and that you will be willing to defend. If your daughter grows up prefering an alternative she will use a nickname.

Syvilla · 25/11/2018 14:43

Amie - spell it Amy or Aimee; Amie looks made up and misspelt
Addison - the disease, an awful American girl’s name
Sierra - don’t like it; it’s an Apple/IOs operating system or something
Serena - not to my tastes, but nothing wrong with it
Jocasta - again, I’m not a fan, but nothing wrong with it
Matilda - beautiful and perfect

MrsFoxPlus4 · 25/11/2018 15:18

I like Amie, I’d maybe spelt it Amiee though. I’m an Amy spent Amee. So many different spellings but Amiee is my favourite

MrsFoxPlus4 · 25/11/2018 15:20

I think when using Amy there’s so many different spellings it’s always a name that needs correcting. I new Amy, Aimee, Amiee, Ami, Aimie thoughrout school. But my mum choose Amee

IVflytrap · 25/11/2018 15:49

I like Amie (or Amy?), Serena and Matilda. Serena is my favourite.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 25/11/2018 16:03

I'd be asking my not very good friend why she laughed if i was you.

Although how do you want the first name to be pronounced, do you mean it to be pronounced aim-me/aim-y or are you prononcing it am (as rhymes with ham) am-y because if your pronoucing it tye second way could that be why your friend laughed? If your thinking of the name Amy, its pronounced more like Aim than am. If you are then i dont mind the altered spelling to much although i woukd prehaps use one of the more standard spellings

Addison -, is more of a surname and yes a desease

AlphaJuno · 25/11/2018 16:07

I quite like Sierra
What about Carena or Celine/Celina?

kenandbarbie · 25/11/2018 16:11

I like:

Amy
Serena
Matilda

Petalflowers · 25/11/2018 16:11

Addison sounds like a boys name to me and not keen on Sierra.

Other names are fine.

None of them are laughable names.

You’ve just learnt the first rule of naming a baby, don’t discuss with anyone (apart from dh).

n0ne · 25/11/2018 16:20

Matilda is great, Serena is nice, can't get on board with Jocasta although I like Roman names usually. The other three are not my bag at all.

AdaColeman · 25/11/2018 16:22

Addison, not a good idea to name your child after a disease.
Sierra, sounds like a car or computer software.
Amie, she will spend a lifetime correcting its spelling.

The other names are fine, I quite like Jocasta, a feisty name!

jq28 · 25/11/2018 16:24

Love Sierra and Addison. How about addalyn?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 25/11/2018 16:32

Addalyn?? It's getting worse!

CloserIAm2Fine · 25/11/2018 17:52

Amie is a nice name but not with that spelling, it should be Amy or Aimee imo

Addison - I know a boy called Addison, so I would assume it was a boys name (or a disease)

Sierra and Serena are fine but not my taste

Not a fan of Jocasta at all

Matilda is lovely though! I would definitely go with Matilda!

It’s mean of your friend to laugh though!

Shadow1234 · 25/11/2018 20:01

Aimie is a bit dated
Addison - not keen
Sierra - ok
Serena - actually like this name
Jocasta - just has a harsh sound about it
Matilda - love this name (and family friend goes by nn of Tilly)

If you like Sierra, would you consider Sienna instead?

LipstickTraces · 25/11/2018 21:31

Amie. It’s fine, but please spell it Amy
Addison. Addison Lee taxis
Sierra. Stripper/escort name
Serena. OK
Jocasta. Bad connotations
Matilda. Awful

MrsFoxPlus4 · 25/11/2018 21:44

My Neices are Addison and Robyn, Addison is 10 Iv never met anroher. But I don’t like the name

user1468942365 · 25/11/2018 21:53

There's an Addison in Greys Anatomy? She's a woman. I don't dislike it actually. Once it's their name, you think a lot less about it. There's plenty of Keith that do ok as adults! So, if you like it, do it

PastaSauceHoarder · 25/11/2018 22:02

I'm an Aimee and I've spent my life correcting people on the spelling - I imagine an Amie would have it worse.

I like Serena the best. Smile

BakedBeans47 · 25/11/2018 22:04

I don’t like Addison, Sierra or Jocasta. Sienna is nicer than Sierra. The others are nice

starkid · 25/11/2018 23:08

I like Addison and Serena most. Also like Matilda but quite popular if that bothers you

SamanthaH92 · 25/11/2018 23:14

Addison was on my list for DD2 but we thought she would get Addi for short and that doesn't sound to nice but i still like the name. Name the baby what you like, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks x

user1468942365 · 25/11/2018 23:24

I've got a Rufus. I agonized over whether I was a dick. Now, he's Rufus and he's 7 and it's not an issue. He doesn't know it's a knobby name. It's his name. It's all he knows!

Ontopofthesunset · 25/11/2018 23:33

I like Serena and Matilda.

I don't mind Amy if it's spelt Amy. Amie would be pronounced Am-mee and means friend in French. Aimée is pronounced Em-may and is the French form of Amy. Amiee is an abomination in any language; how would you pronounce it - Ay-mee-ee or Amm-ee-ee or (if it has an acute accent on the penultimate e) Ai-mee-ay or Amm-ee-ay? There are definitely two i or ay sounds at the end there.

Addison is very masculine and hard, makes me think of the disease and the taxi company and Addis, the bin and dustpan makers.

Jocasta just has very negative connotations - married her son without knowing he was her son and then killed herself when she found out.
