Is Lucas too common?

Me and DH have got Lucas at the top of our baby boy list (we find out sex in 4 days). It's number bloody 5 in the top names though.
I've always like different and unique names but we both seem to like this one.
Our first DS is called Grayson that we picked about 8 years ago (he's only 15mo) and has always been top of our boy list. We never looked at the popularity of Grayson, I've since looked and it was number 97 when we chose it, 25 when we used it and it's number 20 now.
So pretty high in the top 100 anyway!
I like Lucas (one tree hill anyone?!?!) And it's a name we seem to agree on.
Other names I liked were Axel and Quinn but DH isn't as keen and they could be super popular next year anyway.
Do we just take the plunge and go with Lucas?

I like it.
(I don't currently know any - I thought teenage DD had a friend called Lucas, but it turns out it's his surname!)

OutPinked · 16/11/2018 09:32

It’s very popular here. My DC go to a small school and all of them have a Lucas in their class. I hear it called a fair amount in public too.

I wouldn’t let it deter you if you’re set on it though. Common doesn’t always mean bad. William has been very popular for hundreds of years but it’s never deterred people from using it.

Use Dark Greener Names website for accurate U.K. Name stats. Goes from 1996-2017 and they update it every year. It will not only show you what number in the charts but if it's risen quickly or stayed fairly steady. I know 3 Lucas', 1 Luca and 1 Luke.

One in most of the classes in the kids' infant school. Mind you we have five Zak/Zac/Zach/Zacks in one class!

We found out yesterday the baby is a boy.
While discussing names last night i said I like the names with Son at the end.
Jaxson. Jenson.
DH says Jameson. Which I never thought of but I am now realising i love. It means son of James, and DHs name is James! I think it's perfect.
He's saying when he said Jameson he was totally taking the piss. Got 23 weeks to convince him it's the perfect name.

It's lovely that it means son of James however just in case your not aware Jameson is also a very well known whiskey! That may or may not put you off Grin

MsHopey · 18/11/2018 08:20

I know it's a whiskey 😂 it doesn't bother me. It's my Grandads favourite as he was born and raised in Ireland!

I only know one Lucas and he's 17

Cookit · 19/11/2018 19:17

Lucas is 25th not 5th. I don’t think it’s overly common.

Cookit · 19/11/2018 19:19

And as a PP said Grayson is 109th so pretty rare.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 19/11/2018 19:26

I would stick to Lucas having a GreySON and a JameSON means their names will get blurred into 1 name. They sound very matchy and samey whereas Greyson and Lucas sound like two individuals.

daisypond · 19/11/2018 19:32

I like Lucas a lot - I only know a couple in their 20s, though, no younger ones. I don't like Axel or Quinn.

Lovinglifemostly · 19/11/2018 19:36

You never know OP when baby is born he may not look like a Jameson or a Lucas. The names we chose for DS2 didn't suit him at all. My DH just said his now name in the hospital and it totally suits him. Lucas was actually one of the names but our surname start with an S anyway so didn't go. Lucas is a lovely name. I know more Luca's than Lucas' though.

lebkuchenlover · 19/11/2018 19:40

Do babies really 'look like' any name, really??

Justgivemesomepeace · 19/11/2018 19:42

I have a 5yr old Lucas. There is only one other in the school. I don't know any more.

BalloonDinosaur · 20/11/2018 00:58

I like Jameson, prefer it to Quinn or Axel.

I have a Lucas (nearly 2) and don't know any others. DP preferred Luca, but I didn't think we were Mediterranean enough to pull it off Grin.

In the end Lucas was the only name we could actually agree on, I wasn't overly enamoured with it initially but I love it now.

TurquoiseDress · 20/11/2018 20:21

I much prefer Luca compared to Lucas!

Just that extra sound at the end is a bit meh, whereas Luca feels short, punchy and strong!

Just my thoughts!

lebkuchenlover · 20/11/2018 21:26

I think Grayson and Jameson is too matchy. I like Quinn best.

onemouseplace · 20/11/2018 21:32

I really liked Lucas when we were naming DS, and it was our front runner for a while, but in the end we decided against it as I wasn't that keen on Luke as a shortened version (I don't really know why - it doesn't bother me now!). I don't know any other ones though.

I wouldn't worry about the relative popularity DD1 has a top two name for her year and we only know one other, DS has a really unusual name (700 and something) and we know 3! And DD2 has one of those was unusual, old fashioned names that has become more popular, and we know loads now.
