I've always loved the name Emma . But I have a niece called Emily. Are they too similar ?

Not even pregnant yet.... Just awake early with my 18 month old and thinking about baby names 😂

My Nan had grandchildren called nick, Nicky and Vicky!

If you like the name (and it is lovely) then use it.

Sungura · 13/11/2018 06:27

They're too much alike, yes. But it depends on how often the children would see each other, too, IMO.

My cousin and I are Emily and Emma. Grew up together and it’s never been an issue!

lalaloopyhead · 13/11/2018 06:48

I don't think so. Yes, they are similar but they are considered two separate names as far as I am aware (rather than being two different forms of same name). Too similar for sisters but I think for cousins absolutely fine.

I’ve got the same name as my cousin. Our mothers were pregnant at the same time as well. They both liked the name and they both had the name. It’s never been confusing in 40 years.

I have a friend with daughters Emma & Emily. Her name is Ellie

She’s a great friend, but shouldn’t have been allowed to choose the girls names 🤣

If you had absolutely had your heart set on it since infants school I’d say it’ll be ‘ok’, but other than that, I’d choose something different.

SallyWD · 13/11/2018 07:39

It's fine.

stellarfox · 13/11/2018 09:48

Totally fine, they are different names and it’s not like they are siblings

Astronica · 16/11/2018 10:58

I think it's fine.

LivLemler · 16/11/2018 11:10

Honestly, I wouldn't. It depends somewhat on how close they'd be in age and how big the family is.

My family is tiny, I was very close to my cousins growing up. I don't see one much these days as we live far apart but I ruled out a couple of names I liked as they were similar to her children's names. So second cousins, not even first cousins.

On the other hand, DH's family is enormous and it wouldn't have occurred to us to rule out any of his cousins' or their children's names, never mind something similar. Only 3 DNs though, so wouldn't have used something similar to their names.

I accept I seem to be in the minority here though!

Pinkkahori · 16/11/2018 11:17

I think it's fine. There are cousins of the same generation in my family who have the same name and it's never been a problem.

Sophronia · 16/11/2018 11:27

I think it’s fine.

Wellonlyifihaveto · 16/11/2018 11:29

I’ve got nieces Amy Emily and Amelia and loved the name Emilia, didn’t use it as husband thought they were all too alike ☹️

Chewbecca · 16/11/2018 11:31

I don't think it matters at all what the cousin's name is unless it is the same name.

notabumpjusttoomanybiscuits · 17/11/2018 19:21

I went to school with a set of twins called Emma and Emily! Should be fine. Both nice names 😊

Ooplesandbanoonoos · 17/11/2018 19:22

I think its fine
