Too similar to Alexa and therefore too virtual assistant?

It's the name that I keep coming back to from our list. It's stuck in my head and I don't think I like the others quite as much.

Part of me thinks why let a potentially tenuous association ruin a lovely name. The other part worries she'd be mocked or forever associated with a smart home device...

My friend at primary school in the 70s was called Alexia. Her parents were hippy academics. I loved, loved, loved her name.

Prefer Athene.

No, silly name. If you like the 'Alex' bit, call her Alexandra, Alex for short.

A friend of mine is called Alexia. We are both 48 and I think it's a lovely name. She is mostly known as Lex.

I'm Greek and my middle name is alexia (except that when they wrote it on the birth certificate there was a communication problem,and it came out being spelled alixia) I think it is a lovely name :)

Sounds a bit of a mouthful... I would use Alexandra instead (and did!) then whatever Alexy diminutive you fancy.

It's a neurological condition meaning "unable to read". Would be embarrassing for her if she was to go into medicine/nursing/speech therapy/occupational therapy/psychology. First thing I hear, rather than a name.

Plus, the whole triggering Alexa devices thing.

Amelia means limbs missing at birth. That doesn’t put people off.

Greek names family here. Personally prefer Alexandra to Alexia. DH is Alex and that sets Alexa off sometimes. Love Elektra.

If you say to someone "No it's not Alexia, it's Alexia" it may also sound like an affectation.

I wasnt defending the name Amelia in any case. I really dislike it, whatever its etymology. I hate the "mealy" bit, like mealworms

Don’t be ridiculous. Alexia is a old established name. For far longer than Alexia has meant being unable to read.

I would pronounce the name as A(lower case a)-lexia, but the medical condition (which is rarely used anyway) as A(upper case)-lexia.

It's a lovely, classy name with a much less unpleasant latin translation
than Amelia.

How about Alessia?

I have taught two secondary age Alexa's and neither seemed to have an issue with bullying. You can't avoid names because of associations, there is always a chance with whatever you pick that the next big thing will share their name. Alexa and Alexia are clearly different anyway!

Alexa is a very popular name, I wouldn't worry about the device thing at all. Alexia is beautiful, was on my shortlist for my first I've only met one other. Go for it!

As others have said, Alexia is a condition where someone acquires an inability to read after a traumatic neurological event such as a stroke. It's a pretty name, but I wouldn't use it for this reason. (Ironically, one of the ones I know is a doctor, and has to mix with people constantly who know this fact).

How about Alexandria, or Alexis?

I do love Alexa- much more than Alexia which I think it a bit too much, too fussy by comparison.

The amazon thing doesn't bother me, we don't have one, but I can see how it's a concern for future, at school etc
