to settle an argument - last syllable like come dine with me or to rhyme with Catherine? Or are both acceptable?

(As first name)

I would actually have said neither - I would have rhymed it with Christine.

RoomWithALoon · 09/11/2018 16:44

I would say it "cal-a-deen". So neither of what you're suggesting. I've never heard of it before - is it for boy or girl?

AtticaRose · 09/11/2018 16:44

But all three are possible, of course.

Nutbutter · 09/11/2018 16:47

It’s a Scottish surname afaik. Friend is planning to name their baby this but got it from a book and I’m surprised at their chosen pronunciation (as I know people with the surname).

Sorry - they’re having a boy

I don't know what's correct. But when I saw the title I pronounced it "come dine" (in my head!)

Bootanicbanshee · 09/11/2018 16:52

Agree with PP I would say 'cal a deen' too. Awful first name.

Peachbubble · 09/11/2018 16:52

I would say Calladeen, and assume it was a boy.

RCohle · 09/11/2018 16:53

I would do Cal-a-deen as well

Nutbutter · 09/11/2018 17:43

Interesting! The people I know with this surname pronounce it like come dine - I always put it in the same mental bracket as Bannatyne, Ballantine etc.

My friend is convinced it’s like Catherine, despite only having read it in a book?! (No Scottish connections). I’ve been wondering whether to say something or not!

It's a surname but probably NOT Scottish.

There is a Scottish/Irish surname Considine with the last syllable pronounced 'dyne' to rhyme with 'mine' and 'Tyne'.

Nutbutter · 09/11/2018 18:09

Ah the people I know are from the Scottish highlands so always assumed it was Scottish.

So do people think “calladin” is legit or should I say something?

OP posts:
Cbeebiesrehab · 09/11/2018 18:15

It looks feminine to me (and a tad made up)
I would pronounce it Cal-a-dine but wouldn’t have a clue really.

PastramiAndRye · 09/11/2018 18:44

I'm Scottish and would pronounce it Calla-dine to rhyme with 'mine'.

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 09/11/2018 18:47

Calladin as in Aladdin with clearing your throat first?

Yeah. Tell them

finallychangedmyusername · 09/11/2018 18:51

I've never heard of it before but would have assumed rhyming dine with wine. It also reminds me of a toddler trying to say Caroline!

Shadow1234 · 09/11/2018 19:02

Rhyming with dine. Calla-dine

Polkasq · 09/11/2018 19:03

I would assume Caladine was said as Cal-a-deen, with the "ine" pronounced as in Christine.

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/11/2018 19:05

It is my mother in law's maiden name. Pronounced to rhyme with Calla-wine.

VenusInSpurs · 09/11/2018 19:07

Seeing it for the first time written down I would rhyme with wine.

It’s a terrible first name, though. IMO.

Eleanor90 · 09/11/2018 20:41

I’d assume to rhyme with “calla-wine” too.

If they like the sound of Calladin/Caladin, why not spell it like that?

Bit odd without a connection to the name, but I do rather like it.

Vanillamanilla1 · 09/11/2018 20:47

I'm in a minority then ...I would pronounce it it Cal la Dine to rhyme with fine and mine

cc4490 · 09/11/2018 20:50

Scottish person here and I'd say calla-deen
I've not heard this name before, I thought it was feminine and quite a pretty name when I read this at first. I don't think I'd choose it for a boy.

AnnaMagnani · 09/11/2018 20:51

Either Cal-la-dine or Cal-la-deen at random. Definitely not like Catherine.

It's a recipe for child (and adult) having to spell their name and tell people how to pronounce it, and say yes it's not a girl's name for the whole of their life.

Will drive them mad.

starzig · 09/11/2018 21:01

I would say calla dine and presume it was an ointment.
