Artemis? Or similar?

Fantasising about naming a second son (DS is 9mo and I have no interest in another baby yet, but love names!). What’s the MN view on Artemis? Not so keen on Art/Arty, sadly...

Any other similar names I might like, that spring to mind?

Artemis is a female Greek goddess.

No idea how it ended up a male name in Artemis Fowl.

Great for a girl though.

Enidblyton1 · 28/10/2018 00:07

I like it, but you know it’s a girls name?

Goostacean · 28/10/2018 00:10

Apparently in Greece it’s often used for males as Artemis was goddess of the hunt... But still, too feminine?

Apollo? Atlas?

zen1 · 28/10/2018 00:12

Aramis (one of the 3 musketeers)?

Goostacean · 28/10/2018 00:13

I just looked up the 3 musketeers before your post, as I could have sworn one was Artemis! Aramis! Love it...

I really like Artemis for a girl.

Sethis · 28/10/2018 00:26

A variation is Artanis, if you prefer that.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 28/10/2018 00:27

It sounds like an aftershave tbh

SleepingStandingUp · 28/10/2018 00:28

Oooh bg twins, Aremis and Artemis

cheesemongery · 28/10/2018 00:31

Andy?

Slappinthebass · 28/10/2018 00:31

I know a couple of young Artemis's, one of them a boy which has always really irked me, had no idea about Artemis Fowl being a boy. I like Atticus.

Agustarella · 28/10/2018 00:32

Artemisius/ Artemisios is a male name. I really like it. Don't call a boy Artemis, it's like calling him Diana.

Goostacean · 28/10/2018 01:23

Aw. Well, it was a nice idea while it lasted! 😂

Artemis is definitely feminine.

Some alternatives:
Aldous
Alastair
Amos

Fevertree · 28/10/2018 05:25

Came to say apollo and atlas. All three are on my list for dc2 due today!

Fevertree · 28/10/2018 05:26

But yes Artemis is for a girl

Eleanor90 · 28/10/2018 08:01

Artemas or Artemus are used for males. I especially like the former, and I actually quite like Artemis for a boy too. I don’t see the issue with it being a goddess; plenty of girls get boys’ names now after all.

TatianaLarina · 28/10/2018 10:16

Artemus/mas meant follower of Artemis though - a distinction that would have been understood at the time but not now - it’s not simply variant spelling.

Artemis was not just goddess of hunting - also childbirth, fertility, virginity, animals etc..

Stringofpearls · 28/10/2018 11:58

I used to know the loveliest Greek lady named Artemis, it's a beautiful name but not really for a boy.

MikeUniformMike · 28/10/2018 13:01

How about Adonis?

RickOShay · 28/10/2018 14:27

Love Aramis.

SilverySurfer · 28/10/2018 15:43

I wouldn't because a) it's a female name and b) if shortened to Art or Arty, he is likely to be called Farty Arty at school. (As a poor kid called Art in my school was called)

Bogger · 28/10/2018 21:30

Arlo, Atticus or Aurelius.

TatianaLarina · 28/10/2018 22:28

Liking Aramis.

If your next baby is female Artemis is great.
