Hi everyone,

Does nnyone know any Arianwens? Do they get called by their full first name or does it get shortened?

I love the name Arianwen, I think it's very beautiful. Can anyone think of similar longish Welsh baby girl names please.

I don't know any but imagine it'd get shortened. I like Elionwy. Arianwen is nice, but for me sounds quite masculine.

bumblenbean · 18/10/2018 16:31

I have a friend called Arianwen and she’s known as Ari by everyone except her parents!

Bryonietta · 18/10/2018 16:48

I know an Angharad, always known as Harry.

Ricekrispie22 · 18/10/2018 18:35

Eulalie
Gwenllian

You could do a hyphenated name like Ffion-Ellana

GRW · 18/10/2018 18:44

Ceridwen, with Ceri for short.

Scatteredthoughtss · 18/10/2018 18:47

Angharad is hardly a beautiful name though is it?
I like Bethany.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/10/2018 19:36

Bethan.
Catrin
Dheryn
Rhiannon
Lowri
Bronwyn
Teagan (Is that Welsh. I think it is but not sure
Tarran
Isolde
Meriel
Meredith

Joinourclub · 18/10/2018 19:38

I love Gwendolyn

MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2018 19:42

Ellana is a new one and not pretty.
Bethany- not Welsh. Bethania is Welsh but not normally a girl's name.
Dheryn - it's Deryn
Bronwyn - it's Bronwen
Teagan (Is that Welsh. I think it is but not sure - Tegan
Tarran - it's Taran - thunder. not normally a girl's name.
Isolde - not Welsh. Esyllt is lovely
Meriel - not Welsh
Meredith - anglicised. Meredydd is a boy's name

MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2018 19:44

Gwendolyn is anglicised. It's Gwendolen and the stress is on the middle syllable. Gwen-DOLL-en

Bamaluz · 18/10/2018 19:44

I know a lovely little Arianwen known as Weni to her parents.

BestIsWest · 18/10/2018 19:46

Esyllt is my favourite Welsh name. It’s such a pity I hadn’t heard of it when DD was born.

MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2018 19:46

Elionwy is new to me. Not keen on it. Presumably pronounced El-YON-wy (wy sounding like the wi in English 'with').

RaininSummer · 18/10/2018 19:47

Those names are all beautiful. I may not be saying them correctly bit on paper they look gorgeous.

JennyHolzersGhost · 18/10/2018 19:48

Arianwen and Angharad are lovely names. Welsh names can be so beautiful.

MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2018 19:48

Arianwen is pronounced Ar-YAN-wen.

soundsystem · 18/10/2018 19:48

I have an Arianwen! Usually known as Ari, but starting to use her "long name" more as she gets older.

I love, love, love Gwenllian but we're not in Wales and I feel like I'd be setting her up for a lifetime of being called Gwen-Lillian.

JennyHolzersGhost · 18/10/2018 19:49

Maybe the people who don’t like them aren’t familiar with Welsh accents and so don’t know how beautiful those names can sound.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/10/2018 19:52

I love the name Eirian

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/10/2018 19:54

Came on to say Eirian as well! And Gwenllian is beautiful too...

BestIsWest · 18/10/2018 19:55

Mike, DH and I were just talking about this - maybe you can help.

We’re never sure how ‘wy’ is pronounced. I vaguely remember a teacher saying it was ‘wee’ in one part of Wales and like ‘oi’ (Can’t think how to write the sound) in other parts - So Myfanwee in some places (John Betjeman poem) and Myfanw-oi (in the song).

-Neither of us is speak Welsh fluently but have grown up here so hav3 heard it pronounced both ways.

Mwnci123 · 18/10/2018 20:14

Arianwen is lovely. I have never known one, so don't know how people would ordinarily shorten it.
Other long/ longish Welsh names (not already mentioned):
Arianrhod
Rhiannon
Melangell (a favourite of mine, but tricky for people who can't do the 'll'
Awena
Aeronwy (I'm not keen but DH likes it, I suspect because of Dylan Thomas connection)
Elenid

tinytemper66 · 18/10/2018 21:41

I have a Welsh name which was on another thread about the pronunciation! 😂

sproutsandparsnips · 18/10/2018 21:45

I second Gwenllian
Eiluned
Meiriona

Mummaluelae · 19/10/2018 18:58

Knew a girl called Arwen, which is similar.
