New girls shortlist

It's too early to know the gender but I've convinced myself it's a girl and wanted to run my shortlist past you.

Beatrix is my number one, my husband's favourites are Genevieve and Aurora, and we both like Tallulah and Scarlett but aren't sure if they're a bit of stripper-ish (mixed reviews in the past when considered for my son who I was sure was a girl!) We also really love Azélie (or Zélie - not sure if we would use the full name).

I really like vintage names (I know they're not all vintage but my hubby vetoed a lot of my favourites) and I also like names that have a bit of an edge and aren't too popular. What do you think of this new list - which do you like and which should we knock off?

Love Beatrix!

Beatrix Genevieve is really lovely.

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/10/2018 13:16

I wouldn’t describe Aurora as edgy-to me it’s quite the opposite. It’s a whimsical Disney Princess.
Not a fan of Scarlett, don’t like the diminutive ‘Scarl’
Like Zèlie, would describe this as edgy and definitely a bit different.
Don’t like Genivieve but I do like the diminutive Ginny!
Not a fan of Tallulah but like Delilah, which I feel has a similar vibe.

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/10/2018 13:16

Oh sorry, like Beatrix, feel it’s edgier than Beatrice. Like the diminutive Bea.

ZebraKid71 · 17/10/2018 14:49

I'm not a fan of Beatrix. Love Talulah! I know of one who is about 15 who goes by Lu. Also really like zelie.. I think it's fits your criteria really well and I've never met one in real life.
I do like genevieve, but the only one I know goes by jenny which ruins it a bit for me.

daisypond · 17/10/2018 14:59

I like Beatrix (but prefer Beatrice). I'm not keen on Genevieve, but it's OK. Aurora is awful and frilly. I don't mind Tallulah and Scarlett. Zélie is nice - I've not heard of that before.

DC2018 · 17/10/2018 15:35

I love Genevieve. It's my favourite by far. I do like Beatrix but the nickname Trixie is very stripper to me! Aurora is nice but quite frilly and getting very popular now. Azeile is ok but will get lots of interesting pronunciations. I like Scarlett but it's not my favourite x

LeeMiller · 17/10/2018 15:41

Genevieve is lovely, often ends up as Gen or Genny which is a bit dull, but it also lends itself to other diminutives like Ginny, Vivi, Nev, Nieve....

I prefer Beatrice to Beatrix, which seems to crop up every day on MN at the moment, not sure if it's having a popularity surge?

Aurora is frilly and princessy, not at all edgy. Zelie makes me think of jelly.

Sophronia · 17/10/2018 15:54

I like Beatrix, Genevieve and Tallulah.

Pemba · 17/10/2018 16:43

Trouble with Aurora, it is pretty but if anyone who can't pronounced their 'r's (or little children) try to say it, it can often come out 'aw-aw-wa' which sounds a bit silly. A bit of a mouthful for anyone too, maybe?

I like Tallulah, very musical, and Genevieve too. Zelie (can't do the accent) never heard of it before, but I like it and it would be very unusual which is good.

Sorry but I don't like your number one, Beatrix (or Beatrice) as I don't like the 'beer' sound at the beginning.

Shadow1234 · 17/10/2018 17:37

Genevieve is a lovely name. (my favourite on your list)

Beatrix is ok but prefer Beatrice as it sounds softer

Tallulah and scarlett are ok, but nowhere near as elegant and pretty as Genevieve

Azelie or zelie not keen on - very harsh sounding

Mrsnjg · 18/10/2018 21:12

Zelie is on my shortlist! Its French and I think its soooo nice!

RavenWings · 18/10/2018 23:43

Beatrix - ok, not amazing
Genevieve - pretty. Wouldn't call it edgy, it's very fem.
Aurora - Disney princess, and one of the more helpless ones at that. Not edgy at all.
Tallulah - nope. Flouncy and frilly, not edgy in the slightest.
Scarlett - I like
Azélie/ Zélie - really like these

I'd go for one of the last two options.

manicinsomniac · 19/10/2018 01:37

Beatrix - Not keen but it's 'cooler' that Beatrice
Genevieve - Really like it
Aurora - quite pretty. Wouldn't choose it.
Tallulah - it's ok but not keen really.
Scarlett - quite like it
Azelie/Zelie - Never heard this but I love it. I'd pick this one - unusual and funky.

Icklepup · 20/10/2018 08:56

I like Genevieve

pixieloux · 20/10/2018 12:22

Beatrix - Love it! It’s on our list this time around. My DH won’t consider Beatrice and one of the reasons is because he thinks that Beatrix has more to it/is more edgy.

Genevieve - Was also on our list but it’s too matchy with DD2’s whole name lol. It’s very pretty - more feminine than edgy but it does offer a lot of NN choices.

Aurora is my eldest’s name so it’s obviously my favourite. I agree that it’s very feminine rather than edgy but the potential NN, Rory offers a nod to that - if that’s to your taste. It is rising in popularity too but I think that could be a positive for it... A lot of people seem to automatically think of the Disney princess so (as a mum of one) it’s nice to see it’s (seemingly) becoming a name in it’s own right. I don’t think a lot of people think of it as an old name/vintage because of it’s rising popularity though.

Tallulah is nice but is up there on the frilly side - I personally think even more so than Aurora.

Scarlett is lovely and isn’t overly girly. I love -et/ette names (DD2 is Violet) I know/know of quite a few though.

Azelie isn’t my personal favourite but it’s got an edgy to it.

I think Beatrix is fab and fits your criteria the best.

Glumglowworm · 20/10/2018 12:39

Aurora is absolutely gorgeous

I only know one who is mid teens, but it has now crept into the top 100 last year if that bothers you.

I also like Beatrix and Tallulah but I’m not a fan of Scarlett or Azelie
