Sweet and vintage or musty and old?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I like it. I've never met one but I think there was a corrie character years back called Alma so it's not like it's unheard of. Fits in with the current styles of names around

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 09/10/2018 15:50

Makes me think of "alma mater"

Asthenia · 09/10/2018 21:57

Alma was my great grandmother’s name, and my gran and mum’s middle name. I never see it used so I think it’s lovely.

DramaAlpaca · 09/10/2018 22:57

I think it's awful, sorry. It's marginally better than Alba though.

Sophronia · 09/10/2018 23:51

I think it’s ready for a comeback, and if not, it will be in a few years type. Alma, Irene and Vera might be the next Ava, Iris and Violet!

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 09/10/2018 23:53

Means soul in Spanish and Portuguese. Beautiful ❤️

Bessieham · 10/10/2018 00:16

To me it conjures up an image of a homely European woman in her 50s/60s.

Probably Swiss.

I still think it would be lovely on a toddler and young woman though too!

daisypond · 10/10/2018 17:42

I really like Alma. It's a great name - a million times nicer than Ivy, Mabel, etc. I like Irene and Vera too.

Glumglowworm · 10/10/2018 20:49

My first thought was Alma Pudden too! Not a namesake I’d want for my child!

I don’t like alma or Alba I think I just don’t like the sound they make

dontticklethetoad · 10/10/2018 20:53

We know a 5 year old Alma!
Tbh if I didn't I didn't know one, I would have probably turned my nose up at the name. But I now really like it.

MikeUniformMike · 10/10/2018 21:00

I like it. Much nicer than Alba.

RiverTam · 10/10/2018 21:02

Very frumpy and old fashioned in a bad way.

Kokeshi123 · 11/10/2018 05:05

I seem to remember Enid Blyton using it as the name of a fat dumpy girl and being rude about the name itself, saying it was a fat dumpy girl's name. So I get the impression that even in the 50s it was not considered terribly stylish...

Sungura · 11/10/2018 05:06

My drama teacher was an Alma. Nice lady, deserved a nicer name.

Thebeautifullisette · 11/10/2018 05:07

I know an Alma who’s six. Sweet girl and sweet name.

cece · 11/10/2018 05:47

Funnily enough I only thought to myself the other day that Alma is a lovely name.
Love Alma Coogan.

mathanxiety · 11/10/2018 06:01

Oh the irony of a woman named Enid dissing someone else's name...

Clawdy · 11/10/2018 22:16

Another one here remembering Alma Pudden. I also used to live on street called Alma Terrace! Would never pick the name, sorry.

HairyToity · 11/10/2018 22:22

I like it.

eatthepineapple · 11/10/2018 23:00

It's the name of the deaf piano playing nun in Sister Act!

ViserionTheDragon · 11/10/2018 23:15

^^Exactly what I thought too!

Ceebs85 · 11/10/2018 23:27

Love it

ThriftyMcThrifty · 12/10/2018 04:46

I love it. Just met a baby alma and it made me immediately put it on my names list.

ThriftyMcThrifty · 12/10/2018 04:47

Although I love Enid too! Sounds very cool and hip to my ears, not over used but easy to spell and has a nice strong sound.

kviddics · 12/10/2018 05:28

I love it!
