A new child at dgd’s School is called Tallis. I have never heard it before. What do you think?

It is a little girl. Her older brother has an even more unusual name often mentioned here but it could be outing to give it.

I like it (because I like Thomas Tallis) and it's a bit like the Welsh boy's name Taliesin, which I also like.

Like.

I like it!

ElectricCandlelight · 26/09/2018 13:09

Phallus. Seriously I must be juvenile because that's what appeared in my mind...

But I like Tallis.

Even more unusual than Tallis, which I have never heard as a given name in my life? But mentioned often on Mumsnet…. Is he called Balonz?!

Ethelswith · 26/09/2018 14:13

I assumed it was transferred surname name - my DBro follows the Tallis Scholars avidly

I think it works ok as a first name

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 26/09/2018 14:50

Balonz! It never ever gets old

Jitters22 · 26/09/2018 14:56

Ah the wondrous Thomas Tallis - his music is just so evocative of the Tudor era in which he lived. Whenever I listen to it I am transported back to the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

Then there is the great homage to Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Never heard Tallis used as a Christian name before, but I rather like it. I wonder if her parents are fans.

All I hear is the French train service - spelled ‘Thalys’

AlliKaneErikson · 26/09/2018 23:07

Thanks for the reminder jitters - I meant Fantasia; Variations is the version for Brass Band (possibly my favourite piece ever to play on euphonium).

Bezalelle · 28/09/2018 06:56

It's a Jewish prayer shawl to me!

Stringofpearls · 28/09/2018 06:59

Not the worst I've heard but im not too keen, reminds me of the European train company Thalys.

BlowPoke · 28/09/2018 07:08

Is the older brother named Shofar?

Any Jewish person (including me) would find the name Tallis super weird, bordering on bizarre. It’s fhe word for a particular shawl thing that is for many people quite central to the practice of Judaism. It’s also called tallit but tallis is just as common.

FartnissEverbeans · 28/09/2018 08:53

I actually love it. It makes me think of Atonement though.

RedDwarves · 28/09/2018 09:45

Talisman...

Nah.
