So we had finally agreed on the name max for our ds 4 due in November, just heard today a neighbour has named her newborn max. We live in a small village and they will be in the same pre school, class in school, football team etc, would that put you off? It's been hard to agree on a name as it is!!!

I'd still use it.

Neighbours come and neighbours go.

I would mention it to them before the birth, just out of politeness and to judge how ok/pissed off they're going to be about it.

But if you have chosen a name and you love the name, then use it.

If the baby is more than 16 days old, they won’t be in the same school year (unless the neighbours defer entry).

DD has a pretty mainstream name, but we know nobody with it. None of DS’s (3 years older) peers have it. The first time I met another child with the name was the day she started school; the second time was when they had a mid-term new starter. So 3 in her class altogether, entertainingly with alphabetically consecutive surnames - think Sally* E, Sally F, Sally G. They are Y2 now, it’s really not a problem.

I’d tell your neighbours that you’d already agreed the name before your DS is born though.

*not the actual name.
